    @askesis simple, they might be held accountable for anything their students or employees say on their accounts. It's probably not a good idea to have an organization/company/university be in charge of their own social media site.

      Mastodon nas universidades

      Esse texto é muito importante, pois pergunta o seguinte: se as universidades fornecem emails para seus alunos e profissionais terem um login e se comunicarem em rede - promovendo ainda sua identidade e o pertencimento às universidades - por que não fornecer também uma conta do #Mastodon ou do #Fediverso?

      Afinal, são plataformas que não exigem muitos recursos, apesar de terem possibilidades incríveis de interação.

      Há, inclusive, universidades e instituições de pesquisa que já fazem isso! O post acima cita a Helmholtz Association e o MIT, dentre outras iniciativas.

      Mais sobre o mastodon e o fediverso.

      @BeAware @askesis 14 years ago, the University of São Paulo tried to create its own social network platform, the Stoa project http://stoa.usp.br (it seems abandoned, they don't even have an SSL certificate).

      Indeed, moderation was an issue. As an example, I had my blog and account deleted, because the rector ordered, and I was fired from the development team, due to a misunderstanding. I created a first April joke, that some people believed, and it even ended up in the news. 😂

      Be the way, one of the goals of the project was to be federated and we aimed to connect to other educational and research institutes, using some protocol that allowed that.

      Today I laugh, but there were some tough cases where some people were advocating violence, and our small team (4-5 developers) had to deal with it. I cannot image how it would be in case of a very active system in a university as big as University of São Paulo, that can have hundreds of thousands, if we allow the alumni to join? Or dozens of thousands, if not. You need a team dedicated to the moderation, which is not trivial.

      @BeAware @everton137

      The point is (in our days) always moderation. But there are good practices on it: do you know hypotheses.org? Its a french initiative for assembling researches in a solid wordpress platform. But there is a team of developers and supervisors to select and help the users.

      Agora, eu sequer sabia que a USP possuia algo assim! De todo modo, quem sabe o modelo lá atrás era muito mais o do forum virtual fechado e menos oda rede social aberta.
