Not if you are a woman in tech, to use an example with which I am very familiar.

@skinnylatte I need this fantasy novella.
We recently published our first handful of issue pages, covering trans healthcare, equality in the workplace, and Medicaid. These are all huge topics, and a lot is going on, so there will be updates, and, inevitably, corrections:
@skinnylatte I keep meaning to ask if you've read Zen Cho's The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water, and your thread reminded me of it again:

US tech people, read this by @riastrad:

Even if everyone is nice, it's a lot to have a couple thousand new followers, especially during a highly emotional time like the US election season. (And yes, it absolutely sucks that's what elections are like for some of us, but given that's the case, having an influx of new followers that is so big I couldn't vet them, look for people I recognize, etc., was not helpful.)
Mastodon, if you have to do starter packs, *please think about consent* for people being added to starter packs. The bluesky starter packs may be great for new accounts trying to find their people, but it has not necessarily been fun for people who've been added to starter packs without their knowledge. I feel like a couple thousand people looking for a coffee shop have suddenly turned up in my living room.
@eaton Not surprised he wasn't paying attention when the teacher said that A Modest Proposal is satire...
When RMS made a nuisance of himself at a sff convention where an acquaintance was volunteering, the volunteers went to the grocery store and bought broccoli to make corsages for femme-presenting people. RMS apparently hates broccoli, so he spent the weekend staring at femme people's breasts, only to be repelled by the broccoli.
I am extremely excited to learn the word entiativity ("the perception of a social unit as a 'group,'" according to wikipedia)! Particularly in *sighs* US election season, it's going to be useful to me to be able to think about perceptions of groupiness.
I would follow this woman into battle:

I saw a lot of similar kinds of arguments during the height of devops-as-a-movement. What I'd really like to know is what mastodon gates people value and why. That is, if someone thinks the search for the right instance is deeply important, I'd like to hear what their reasons are.
@danlockton I still laugh when I think about the time when @eaton called Teams "the winchester mystery app".
Greetings new followers! I believe many of you got here because @kevlin (thank you!) mentioned a tweet of mine in a talk. My stance on many of the questions/discussions taking place in my mentions might be addressed by the original thread, so here it is:
@eaton I'm trying to set up my blog, and I have that slightly panicky feeling I get every time I need to set up a new and different programming environment: all these choices to make that I understand imperfectly, and the defaults of every tool I touch are slightly off-kilter from what I want.
@eaton It is beside your point, but you've reminded me of a favorite sequence from a favorite movie:
I play with books, cats, food, yarn, and dirt, not all at the same time. Software engineer. Society of People Interested in Boring Things. She/her.
