   I took my brother-in-law to a secret ‘ethnic’ restaurant where I don’t speak the language and there is no menu. I don’t even know if it’s a restaurant, really. But it has my favorite food.

   I find that I end up with the best meals this way. Linguistic fluency is not necessary for fulfilling my deepest desires.

     My friends always say ‘if there’s a secret door’, I will always open it, and find or be fed the best and most delicious things. And that they will always follow me through any secret doors.

     One of my old friends wrote me a message two weeks before he passed. That he dreamed I was in Bangkok walking around with him and feeding him snacks in every corner and dark alley, again. I miss him.

     When I was younger, I knew some people who were so worldly and who knew their cities so well that they always knew where to go and what secret fun things there were. I resolved to be that person. I think I made it happen. I enjoy being around people like that, too. I really love big, massive cities for this reason. The element of you can live somewhere for really long and see find a place or area or group of people you have never been to or met. It’s one of my favorite feelings in the world. Unfamiliarity in a familiar place.

     @stephen haha, many of these places function as restaurants but only for people in their communities. I usually need to go with someone from the community to first be introduced (and also so that it can be ascertained that I am not a food or permitting inspector). So, you’re kind of right.

     @skinnylatte I realise this isn't what you meant, but my very first thought when I read "I don’t even know if it’s a restaurant, really" is that you are striding into someone's home, eating their meal and they then sheepishly accept some money, wondering what the hell is happening.

     In college, my Nepali friend took me to a house in little India, Singapore, which was really a meals and lodging place but only for Nepali monks and Bhutanese traveling salesmen. I never knew what was going on but their thukpa and momo fed me for a long time. I had to beat the door at the house where the doorbell was missing, and say ‘please feed me momo’ in my bad Nepali. It was wonderful. I went again recently 20 years later, but it was not the same vibe without my friends.

     @dicenbuttons @yvonnezlam I did follow a bunch of old Chinese aunties off a bus one day. They went through a secret door.. into a Costco entrance I didn’t know about, and was glad to find.
