simIf you care about the worker and his wages then you would limit immigration, in fact... you'd probably stop immigration. Only when there are few workers to labour can the worker hold the power to negotiate a better wage and corporations will be forced to train and give better incentives to work.
The aftermath of the Black Death is the greatest example where this became true for the peasants in the fields. Lords would even poach from each other to offer better pay and conditions. Peasants would escape for better conditions.
@lanodan@Arcana@adamgreenfield What he is doing is the equivalent of getting his laptop out and continuing with work using public transport. Except he no longer needs to worry about having a table or his lap.
I understand the concern that he isn't going to be aware of his surroundings or be able to be present with the other people there. But we are already atomised, I don't think this is much different to phones or laptops in public. There are better ways to tackle being present in public, but that requires creating an inviting environment that you want to be present in that isn't overwhelming the senses and creating communities where people grow up with and know each other. It requires creating high trust in society, fewer people around so there are less strangers. I don't think cities are conducive to this... although you can probably create a mini-community where neighbours know each other and looked out for each other if people didn't keep moving around and weren't so quick to cut people out over differences in opinions.

sim"According to statistics, around a quarter of rapes in Germany are committed by foreigners, as are a third of murders. However, residents without a German passport make up around 10 percent of the total population. The way the German justice system deals with these cases is mind-boggling: A white German woman was raped by a refugee from Afghanistan in Regensburg, Bavaria. He received a relatively light sentence, but "could not be deported" because "the Taliban could pose a threat to his life". Where do you think he went on holiday after he got out of prison? Yes, he went to Afghanistan (with German taxpayers´ money)."
It's not fair for me to talk about what I recall since it wasn't that long ago that I watched. And I've read the books now too. At some point I need to re-read them. Maybe I'll get to when I have children of my own to read to.
@whiteline@ageha@Moon@sampo@sjw And now because of the work that Jackson and team did in the film trilogy, the series is relevant for the film industry... I see people reference how they approached film making as it was ground breaking at the time and that we can still learn from it now.
@Moon@ageha@sampo@sjw Could be a child thing. Like people may not have appreciated Jar Jar Binks but shockingly I enjoyed it. He was goofy. Then again, it has been a while since I watched those films and I don't recall too much about them now. Phantom Menace was probably more rememberable out of those three films. If I tried, I could probably describe it better. Not sure if that is more because of a game that came out or the film.
@Moon@mushroom_soup Are we sure Joanne isn't a troll? Trolling us all... give people an opportunity to abuse a system and there will be those that take it.
This is the problem with inserting relationship drama. Can't have them happy, no conflict there to overcome. I forgot how bad this relationship was now...
