@evan i think in a free market, we would be allowed to choose a social media experience that is not likely to be spoiled by advertisers (posing as non advertisers trying to sell us stuff when we thought we were there to make friends or talk to people for the sake of itself). good social nets will be those that can be reserved for real, private people. I'm curious what you think about the enshitification of software as Cory doctorow describes it

@dansup @pixelfed I am new to fedi but was an instagram enjoyer until I realized how sick it made me. I am excited to see pixelfed take off and I think what can be different this time around is we can educate lay people about how to be technologically anticapitalist with FLOSS. if people don't see the "real-world value" of the infrastructure available to them, they aren't gonna know what they're missing. i think the info just needs to be condensed and spread. I'm working on a how to guide thing

I didn't understand for a long time (though my husband has been on fedi for years) and now being here, getting to have such practical, considerate conversations with people who share strong values... this is special. Ofc now I love alt text! I am curious HOW I stayed unaware so long. I tend to suspect an evil conspiracy when I find an acorn I think I should've had long ago. But alas... I lose nuts sometimes... 😳

@smitten hm ok I wasn't paying enough attention to this. Why don't posts just get auto added to an alt text for screen reader software?

@smitten hmm cool sure ok. Thank you. I'm also wondering why that's a tolerable effect of the alt text field-in other words, does it disable extant screenreader features in that sense then even tho the alt field was intended to provide perhaps more comprehensive description than the image or text within it or in its caption alone? but people just don't use it properly?

@smitten Ah yeah, and admittedly it's cause I've never taken the time to write good alt text and often didn't write any. I will now. I was wondering also if the alt text field will replace a screenreader's source even if it's blank. I guess this is really a question about individual screenreader softwares tho now that I think about it.
