Github is great for software development, but it is monopolistic and it seems about time that we all migrate to something that has the same flavour of openness and freedom as the activitypub based fediverse.

I know that gitlab is working on a solution but it might take some time and we also need other players on the scene.

Is there an activitypub based git server out there?

@tasket yeah, in this sense i suppose android is linux. But the design of that additional layer between OS and user does make a difference imho how attractive and useful to average user but also how enabling for app developers. You can have a "convergent" approach like #kdemobile or the browser as UI like #firefoxos etc.

All in all I have this vague feeling that there are enough pieces of the puzzle on the table that somebody could solve it but somehow it doesnt happen for years now.

@just_a_frog @BigAngBlack @huffles yeah, I dont think it is technical difficulties that hold back linux mobile, though obviously usability, security etc. need to upgrade a level if it is to become a mass device rather than remain a techie niche.

But there is an entrenched cartel that is milking the situation based on business models that you don't want to replicate, so its an open issue how to incentivise people to go against it.

@BigAngBlack @huffles some people say we should prefer android over #linux mobile because its security model is better. Dunno, never really warmed up to it. There is something claustrophobic and disagreeable about the #android experience, both as user and as developer. I really wish we hadn't wasted decades on it but there was no choice on the matter. This is what oligopolies do to you. They rob your life's options.

    @PGBeattie

    stupid compared to which creature?

since the dawn of time some of us continuously think and argue that we all will do so much better if only X, but the fact that we don't seem to follow such wise advice might indicate that said advice is not the smartest to start with?

the real tragedy is that the trial and error that seems to be the actual way societal beliefs and behaviors evolve will not be survivable for much longer under exponential technologies

@garius a lot of people here still fighting twitter wars or whatever, with the perceived advantage of being on home ground. Though virulent attacks on the very builders of these open source tools are not unheard of either.

The challenge now is that online behavior, even when on a new and more human-centric platforms is now prisoner to its damaged history.

A lot of healing needs to happen, but who and how?

Arrogance is still with us. Its called #technosolutionism those days. The idea is we don't have to worry because some profit-driven entrepreneur will solve all the adverse repercussions of our out-of-control consumerism.

Its not going to happen, some tech inventions will surely ease our journey towards a sustainable future but the biggest needed change will be to our value systems.

Unfortunately the moral backbone of lost societies, how they held together is hard to revive.

@SebastienK @1br0wn thats true, but there are also *very* geeky musicians (electronic music exists already for decades) that write and use, e.g., real-time C++ synthesis tools that are far more sophisticated than a web server exchanging #activitypub json blobs

as of late people migrate and use web technologies more (e.g. #strudel https://strudel.cc/ and other such web audio projects)

my hope is that at some point these niche communities will merge and something really wonderful will happen

musicians are a strange breed. they talk a nice talk (rather sing it), but don't seem to be walking it.

#funkwhale is way down the list of adoption by #fediverse users, which is a bit of a mystery to me

while not automatic, getting hold of decentralized means of distribution should be somehow help them create a more sustainable artist economy

maybe its a matter of time?

@estelle i think he is making a gross logical error or at least uses terms in very narrow ways. "Technological progress" is not a one-way street.

Technology is the sum total of cultural adaptations that make use of the external environment. It has countless dimensions. We choose which ones we explore and develop and towards what aim.

The idea that we can have large numbers of people on the planet living comfortable lives without sophisticated technology is not just wrong, its dangerous.

@zombierustpunk these two states always coexisted and wage eternal battle for people's minds and souls.

Society is not built by the evil side, but it is effective reacting to evolving conditions.

E.g., the Web was born out of idealism and optimism. But was soon confiscated by greed and exploitation of human weakness.

Which now prompts people to pull their better selves together against tough odds to try to fix it (i.e., #fediverse).

Only to be subverted again if we let our guard down. Etc.

@webology there is no need to wait until its too late and complicated to act

Have, e.g. a progressive corporate tax that scales with market share and dis-incentivises gigantism and conglomerates

As a rule of thumb, you should never have any entity control more than 10% of anything. Thats how you preempt bad scenarios, diversify risks from known and unknown factors.

Society gains nothing from megacorps (economies of scale are already available at much smaller level). They are just vampires.

@manav absolutely love this scale (of #Misirlou fame https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hLIXrlpRe8), also known as Byzantine, Hijaz Kar, Double Harmonic, the Darkest Scale in Music and who knows what else :-)

Nice clean visualization and the interactivity works smoothly.

Chords are not really relevant in traditional #modalmusic but I kinda think that computing and displaying compatible triads might help people learn and explore bridges to western harmony...

@jwildeboer ideally there should be a reference implementation for each popular language. People would learn from them, reuse them etc.

Listening to what many #fediverse developers say I suspect the reason there aren't any such mature efforts is because of the nature of the #ActivityPub specification.

But even the complaints are kinda all over the place, like the proverbial blind people touching different parts of a weird, never seen before #mastodon
