I'm finally on page 8 of 10, trying to triage all the moderation related issues on the Mastodon repository. It's been quite a lot of work to process the 244 open issues related to moderation.
That's where a lot of my recent PRs have come from.

It's such a juxtaposition between how the reports management UI in Mastodon used to look compared to how it looks today:
This is the layout Iโm starting to experiment with for 4.3+
Though Iโm trying to involve UI/UX folks to ensure we get the design "rightโ, so I've seen a few early mockups that make the reported account section much nicer.
Funnily enough, after this screenshot, the colors seem to have changed again.
I do want to change the "reason selector" (category / rule violation thing) to only show the currently selected values, and have an explicit "edit" mode.
Those old screenshots are taken from the PR where I added the report notes functionality to Mastodon back in 2018.
There's an open issue discussing the future of the Reports Management UI in Mastodon here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/31444
I'm going to start working on the implementation of this โจ

@mattly all good!
@mattly have you seen the new notification filtering options coming in Mastodon 4.3?
In other news, I'm currently looking for German and European companies or organisations that might want to work with me, especially if the project is Fediverse related.
I'm currently going through a visa application, and we're struggling to prove why I should be based in Germany, because most of my work is foreign & theoretically able to be done anywhere.
So I'm looking for non-binding letters of intent from German & EU based companies.
Okay, so, there's like this Mastodon issue that I'd like to work on that's a huge precursor to potentially a lot of other things that could improve the fediverse.
However, in order to work on it, I'd need probably โฌ10k+ in funding, because it's likely to take me at least a month and a half to complete, as it's quite complex.
How would you go about gaining that amount of funding?
Mastodon Admins & Mods: Would it be useful to be able to keep notes on Instances, much like you can on Accounts and Reports?
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/24586
I'd be happy to implement this, though may require some additional funding to help push it over the line.
We've recently added a view of the Audit Log for an Instance, so you now have that in the Instance details page, coming in 4.3
@hrefna thanks for the shout out! It's more important now than ever before that people help support my work, as my primary source of income is my NLNet grant for the next 6 months.
So without enough funding from the community, I should really be focused on the grant instead of working on Mastodon or other projects.
Something important to note here is that these are mostly cosmetic changes, many of the "moderation issuesโ that people raise also relate to ActivityPub or โhow data is federatedโ
Those issues are much more complicated to handle, and take a significant amount of time (so I don't often have the funding to work on those)
Right now I'm just trying to catch "missing" features or confusing features.
A โmissing" feature being something where there should have been a way to do a certain thing, that should've been possible with current federation logic.
For instance, missing links between pages, missing abilities to find certain information, etc.
So like, for ages we didn't have navigation links to Appeals and Account Warning Presents, even though those features existed, we'd just somehow missed the navigation links for those.
@mattly @jenniferplusplus @quintessence indeed, I'd be happy to chat!
I've been working on a few tools to improve the Moderation UI in Mastodon:
- Allow searching for reports from a given instance/user: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/31449
- Attempting to address the information flow on Report Details page: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/31444
For the second one, I'd really love to have a sit down with a UI/UX designer to see what we could do better in this page (there is a lot of data)
I still think we are best delegating a pooling link metadata fetches, and enabling groups to work together to operate said infrastructure or use fastly or similar CDN to provide a cache of the extracted data as JSON.
There's no reason fediverse software needs to do the unfurling, besides wanting absolute control over it.

@tchambers I am really looking forwards to Taylor throwing her support behind Kamala and absolutely murdering Trump in the process.
Note: there's also a separate idea to allow for doing a "incident report" which I believe might fit some moderation team's workflows better than trying to do such a write up via report notes.

We've not yet opened a separate issue for this idea yet though, but that comment from @quintessence has some context.
