@eric I think what offends people is the way the instance essentially says "in case people get harassed, we trust they will use necessary tools to stifle these actions"; people perceive it as "We don't care, sort it out yourself." (so it's free speech?!!!!!!) I personally agree with it as it allows the user to decide with their sufficient tools (block, mute, so on) and not a dogmatic presence, though it's understandable (even if disagreeable) that people want more moderation intervention.
Is that enough to disallow innocent folks caught in the crossfire from communicating to one another, I really don't think so; haven't we had enough world wars in the past five years to prove that citizens just want to live and the problem is with their governments? Why not use that analogy to say and understand the users of an instance just want to have fun regardless of their administrator(s)?
@allison@Pawlicker it's probably very possible to use Windows 7 nowadays with that exact method (and it might actually be a better experience than 10), and there seems to be a kernel extension for it too, named VxKex.
@Pawlicker makes sense, I probably assume everyone just naturally moved on to 7 when that came out (since Vista was commonly seen as putrid, esp. compared to 7).
@getimiskon Scrap that, their servers are back up. Here's their post in question: https://pleroma.envs.net/notice/AXkLRCxTteyMVk51do "run by a starnix member with the help of someone bad" like that's damning proof that I am inherently evil, but whatever.
I have since reached out to the person in question (seirdy) on a Mastodon alt, unfortunately the post I made is marked as a private mention so you'll have to take my word for it on what actually happened or if it's actually real. I have never received any response whatsoever.
@getimiskon Something something I started this instance in mid 2023, added a blockbot (then removed it after a month because seriously I just don't care either way), and made a lighthearted post saying "what if i make a fediblock post that says PLEASE BLOCK ME"
They have since then made a public fediblock post that I would try and dig up but it seems their servers are down (ha), and since then have added this instance to their Tier-0 (IIRC?) blocklist.
@getimiskon@ezio what exactly is the danger of running outdated things on the Internet precisely? sure, if you do outdated web browsing you're probably asking for trouble, but apart from that I really don't get why "9x/XP/Vista/7 online = BAD THING, you WILL get virused"
@kirby see I really wish it didn't, the implementation itself functions and it's undeniably neat if niche and admittedly irrelevant to use nowadays unfortunately. The lack of straightforward documentation, iffy implementation on things, insistence on donations/contributions and the staff's attitude are a real bummer. Seriously wish one could just self host it or contribute to it as OSS, I seriously think that modal could work out for that type of project. Alas.
@Drand Speaking for myself, I appreciate the clarification and short explanation, as otherwise this can be perceived quite simply as an attack with no true proper reason.
One question, though. Yes, I acknowledge that information on my instance is public and I do not intend to intensely restrict access to it (as there is quite simply no good reason or way to do so without extensive compromises), but this does not explain why the bot needs access to either the public timelines or specific user accounts if it is just searching the vaguely-identified "content moderation policies." For convenience, I'm not going to question the relevance or possibility of moderation in a federated network, as it's quite simply irrelevant right now. There is a lot of ambiguity in that regard so rather than making assumptions, I'd rather ask: what's up with that? How is the information there relevant? (and also, why are single-user instances, like mine, that only have very few users, relevant to this as well, and is there a way to opt out?)
edit note (in response to the parent post's recent edit): I'm more or less sure if this answers some concerns both expressed on my end and on the O.P.'s end (natalie), perhaps I am missing an implication or misinterpreting certain things. Anywho, this is not my debate to start or partake in, so I'll digress. Blocking the IP remains a "good enough" opt-out mechanism, if a bit archaic, for my needs.
@dushman@ovivu@LizzyontheUpside "hey buds let's play Jackbox together.. no, no, not on discord. open this website to have owncast so that you can see my screen and-- no, this website. then download this app you've likely never heard of called Mumble it's fuckin really cool it does voice chats. and then connect your voice.. wait you don't have accounts on that? no, I won't just use Discord group chats, this is superior!"
Computer fiddler, music listener, game player, part time weeb, mere and hopefully inoffensive human being. Now 100% self hosted because some of you don't understand the concept of fediblock.I've said it before: think, believe in and be whatever you'd like to be; I do not care, so long as you are a personality I can socialize with.I do not seek to be an unfriendly presence by default; if you do feel as such, feel free to question such matters with me.
