    In 2009, people were sick of Windows XP, an 8 year old OS by then.

    Can you imagine running an OS that's over eight years old on your primary computer, wouldn't that be wild, insane, unthinkable?

      @atlas@thonkbox.rightmouse.click Also what also happened in the late-XP era was the Netbook craze. Netbooks were too underpowered to properly run Vista 9 times out of 10, which led to the Netbooks getting a special ULCPC SKU which was identical to Home Edition with the restriction that you had to sell it on what Microsoft defined as a Netbook.

      Of course Intel bungled that whole thing but that's another story IMO.

      @Pawlicker makes sense, I probably assume everyone just naturally moved on to 7 when that came out (since Vista was commonly seen as putrid, esp. compared to 7).

      @atlas@thonkbox.rightmouse.click Eh, not really.

      There were plenty of people trying to use XP until the bitter end, especially in the Vista era. "Downgrading" a PC was extremely common.

      Also Windows 10 changed a bit from RTM/1511 to 22H2.

      @allison@hidamari.apartments @atlas@thonkbox.rightmouse.click My school ordered C2Ds with XP in 2010, to replace....PowerPC Macs.

      There were a LOT of XP holdouts because XP quite frankly was the same as 7, it just worked for most people. Furthermore XP ran fast on a lot of low-spec hardware that 7 struggled on, and so on a C2D XP was crazy fast seemingly.

      Sure it lacked 64-bit, 4GB+ RAM support, and the like, and the move to Vista/7 is what really made 64-bit Windows come into it's own.

      @Pawlicker @atlas honestly I could probably use fully patched XP today even if I had compatible hardware, huge amounts of software for just about anything I would want to do and whatever I can't I can just dualboot Linux or BSD and use that

      @atlas @Pawlicker yeah 7 would probably be viable as well, tbh tho, given gamescope and what wine's compatibility is like now I just single boot Linux and see very little reason to use anything else

      @allison @Pawlicker it's probably very possible to use Windows 7 nowadays with that exact method (and it might actually be a better experience than 10), and there seems to be a kernel extension for it too, named VxKex.

      @allison@hidamari.apartments @atlas@thonkbox.rightmouse.click The #1 mistake MS made with 11, aside from random bugginess from trying to mangle with shit that worked, is that Windows 11 arbitrarily forces you to buy new hardware.

      This is by design of course. Windows never had a hardware cutoff this dramatic, there are tons of machines that came with 10 but either due to lacking a TPM or being before the hardware cutoff (Skylake, Excavator, etc.) they are Unsupported (tm) and you have to wrangle with it to keep getting updates.
