Question for the two ppl I know who do a lot of garment sewing...

I am gathering material for a large cloak. The outer layer is a beautiful 100% wool tweed. Now I'm sourcing the lining.

This cloak is meant to be serviceable, I'll be wearing it out in the weather (mostly rain or sun, very little snow) in place of a coat.

I want natural fibers, I can't do synthetics.

Leaning towards linen, but the store had a beautiful double gauze in the right color. Good or bad idea?

@Fragglemuppet I mean, I don't agree. Getting away for a day helped me hugely. I had been in a huge depressive spiral but taking a day away I feel a lot more settled and grounded.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to maintain that balance because I do like connecting with folks online... being online has been demonstrably bad for my mental health.

It is amazing how much one day of disconnecting and just playing video games and knitting with no external distractions improved my mental health.

That said I don't think it's the connections with people itself that's the issue... it's the slow creep of news and the depression it causes in my friends and myself. I've done my best to curate my timeline but it's not enough :(

Back to working on the hobby room today with limited online scrolling I think.

Parents, if I could give you one single piece of advice for handling the teenage years...

Be interested in what they're interested in. Let your kid info dump at you, try to remember the things that crop up repeatedly.

Nothing builds that bond between you like just being interested.

Kids don't wake up one day and decide to stop talking to you. It's not a switch that gets flipped the minute they turn a certain age.

Listen to your kids, ffs.

Woke up today (after sleeping through the night which is rare) feeling refreshed and happy. Which is also astonishingly rare.

I really think that cancelling everything yesterday and just spending my day baking and playing video games is the reason. Sometimes we just need to check out of life for the day.

I have a lot of craft projects and things which I'm hoping I can settle into for the evening. Rather than endlessly scrolling.

I have been struggling with anxiety in the evenings, and while I have anxiety randomly all the time... feelings of pending doom at or around bedtime suck extra.

So I've decided that I'm going to cut off any socials, etc after 8pm. I might still watch streaming stuff. But I'm going to disconnect and unplug as it were.

So I need to talk to Telus (internet provider) about something. No agents in online chat so I made the robot put me in the line for a callback from an agent.
Tells me it'll be 15 min. 40 min later I get a call from Telus, and another robot asked me to confirm I wanted to talk to someone and now I've been on hold for 5 minutes...

I hate this planet.

Can we all just like, collectively agree that money DOES buy happiness?

For people who are confused.

Yes, ppl can be happy in all sorts of circumstances.

But money, in our capitalist hellscape, means:

* healthcare
* housing
* food
* security
* therapy
* clothing
* transportation

Having money literally adds years to ppl's lives.

Do you know what the biggest "trick" for "getting healthy" is?

Money.

Lack of the security that money offers causes stress, anxiety, depression. Money buys time. Money buys help.

Money buys life.

I, that is the pile of assorted traumas and mental illness, am absolutely LOVING the weather here lately. It is cold as FUCK but sunny. This is my ideal "Get shit done" weather.

However I, that is a scientist and generally informed person, am reading the headlines like "Driest January on record?" with increasing fear and trepidation for what it means this summer. And just generally for the climate crisis.

Maybe we'll have a super rainy spring and summer??

Just some extra love and hugs to fellow fat people as we brace for yet another round of fat shaming that's "ok because he's a bad guy" from supposed allies.

I save far too many things for "a rainy day" and meanwhile it's a goddamn monsoon outside.

I save a show thinking I shall treasure it, and only watch it when I'm ready (read: deserve the joy). Then I forget about it and move on, and instead have filled the time with something less awesome.

If you, like me, struggle with scarcity mindset then this coming week pick one thing and choose joy over hoarding. We can do it.

This applies to other more tangentially related stuff too. For example, I will be really excited about writing a book, and then put it off. Because why??

Because I don't deserve the fun it will bring? Because I'm savoring it?

Savoring something by hoarding it and tucking it away is joyless.

I'm not doing that anymore. I pick me and I pick joy.

I deserve the joy.

And so do you.

@Gargron One of the most absurd things to me is the power given to the algorithm over our language. The way it is changing, shaping and erasing words from our collective vocabulary.

I'm curious to know if there's ever been quite this level of interference in language before.

Dammit I am so annoyed that eating vegetables and drinking water actually helps.

My local produce box this week included blueberries. But also grapes and a cantaloupe. I knew we weren't going to be able to eat them all, so I made a batch of blueberry muffins. I... actually don't think I've ever made blueberry muffins before? lmao
