Does anybody know of any #mastodon project to build custom feeds? In other words, anything that would allow you to sort and filter your feed in some other way than chronological.
Bluesky’s custom feeds are one of the few things Bluesky does better, and Skyfeed (a 3rd-party app) lets you build your own. Would be awesome if we had something similar over here.
@ben Put it this way: they consider climate political. So no, it’s not only party politics, it’s any topic which they deem political. Concerning, to say the least.
@peterdutoit And that reduces traffic on the road, making for faster trips for the people who can’t work from home, meaning better quality of life for everyone and also less emissions from a faster trip with less idling or stop/starting. Win win!
@mykhaylo@gnu2 I mean sure, making mining illegal wouldn't stop people doing it, there'd still be people trying. But I don't really care about someone illegally running a bunch of GPUs in their basement, because that's not going to use 2% of the country's electricity.
@lightweight Oh, that’s in Firefox (though it looks the same in all browsers). I think the app does look better, but I haven’t used it since I first signed up, because there were so many better options.
@mmasnick One small thing, Mike: “With Bluesky’s algorithmic choice, anyone can make or share their own algorithms and users can choose what algorithms they want to use”
Not anyone can do it. Only developers, at this stage. I’m sure they’ll build a UI for it into the app at some point, but right now you need to be able to code if you want to make your own algorithms.
@lightweight It needs some work, yeah. I know it’s on their roadmap for their designer to look at this year.
Just on this page alone: - inconsistent line weights - sidebar icons not centred - font awesome icons just aren’t very stylish - the post date being underlined when it’s not a link - the top menu bar does something funny when you scroll up - why is there a sidebar at all?! This is one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in mobile web design.
@mmasnick@jbenjamint My point being, I think it being for profit, no matter any underlying decentralisation, will mean a culture not unlike Twitter. As opposed to Mastodon always maintaining the culture of a self-reliant community.
@mmasnick@jbenjamint Interesting. I think the differing financial models will forever delineate Bsky and Mastodon, and who is attracted to each.
Here I donate to cover server costs. It’s my choice to pay my way, and I feel some responsibility towards my server, and the network at large (I also donate to Mastodon).
But if Bluesky is for profit? Well then it’s their responsibility to price it to make profit. I’m not going to pay something unless they make me.
