@lightweight Actually, I can think of one way it’s better. The Bluesky UI is far nicer than Mastodon’s dated default UI. Thankfully there are loads of well-designed Mastodon apps that mean I rarely look at that interface. Like Mona!

But that’s it. All other features are inferior. I’m not counting quote posts because I don’t like quote posts ;)

@lightweight I’m over there because there are some climate/energy people who went there instead of here, but for the life of me I don’t know why anyone who’s on both platforms would prefer it there. It’s inferior in every way, it’s just lacking features.

@taylorlorenz @Gargron Oh man, in the name of increasing revenue (and so shareholder profit) these apps can’t help but all become the same product by stealing each other’s features. They think they’ll steal some market share but they just end up making their product worse. Enshittification!

@hosford42 I mean “removed external ownership” as in shareholder ownership. Not that people external to the workers can’t have some ownership (like could be the case in producer, consumer & platform co-ops, I think?).

@hosford42 Definitely. If I could wave a magic wand I’d convert many companies to worker co-ops (and the rest any other form of co-op that suits!). It wouldn’t solve everything (still operating in a capitalist market, after all), but it’d sure be an improvement over the current situation.

Actually, come to think of it, if all companies removed external ownership of their means of production, would that still be a capitalist market? 🤔

@hosford42 Small addition to this one: worker co-ops can still be for profit. They definitely solve self-imposed worker exploitation, as you said, but operating for-profit in a capitalist market there are still some negatives there.

E.g. they can still take investment that requires growth (because of interest), and while the co-op structure puts a cap on infinite growth, while competing in a capitalist market they’re still incentivised to grow for economies of scale.

I'm sure I've missed some other good points in this thread. (Feel free to add them!)

The main point is: WE ARE DOING CAPITALISM WRONG.

@seachanger Maybe we should find a nice philanthropic billionaire to give a few tens of millions to Mastodon gmbh, no ownership or other strings attached, just so people get the idea there’s money behind Mastodon. The people will come flocking with the legitimisation!

I’m mostly joking … but it sure would be nice to have some spare cash to hire a bigger team.

@vasilis I realise that's not what you asked, but I hope it's helpful.

To actually answer the question, I'd say one topic that's really cool is all the GIS stuff we do these days. Make sure to give real-world examples, e.g. companies that take satellite imagery to optimise ... farming, forestry, maintenance of key infra (like roads, railways, power infra, etc), to spot deforestation or other land change, to optimise urban planning, etc. I think it's a very visual example of tech being useful.

@vasilis I know one thing I was never taught at school about careers is the sheer variety of roles there are in companies.

For example, you could sketch out the variety of roles it takes to run a SaaS company: front end dev, back end dev, devops, QA, PO/PM, UI, UX, scrum master. Maybe data science/machine learning. Account managers/customer service/sales, marketers, data/business analysts, legal, finance, ... I'm sure there's more.

I know 16 yr old me would have found that useful.

@Jfrites @jzillw @linus Wowsers, alright. I was doing 50 mins - 1hr each way last year from Utrecht to Amsterdam, but it was bike > train > bike. It’s way more relaxed than driving an hour. Also, my company didn’t care when I came in so I only did it as much as I wanted, which was generally 3 days a week because I like seeing other humans and I liked my colleagues. I totally get why you want wfh in place of 90 min commutes, 5 days a week.

@jzillw @linus People commute between cities/towns. Very common here in the Netherlands. Still, I agree that I have doubts about 90 minutes being normal. An hour? Absolutely. But I’d hope 90 minutes is on the small end of the bell curve.

I get it, you want people to find your post. But have them find it for the right reasons, and have your post be pleasant to read.

Every inline hashtag breaks the flow of reading, so use them sparingly. It’s also easier to skim the topic of a post if the hashtags are grouped together.

I see a few people group the hashtags at the start of posts - that’s also fine!

#PSA for #people who put lots of #inline #hashtags in their #posts, especially for words that aren’t #even the #topic of the post: stop it.

You’re hashtag #spamming and your post #is #horrible to read.

#One or #two inline hashtags per post, #max. Otherwise put #them at the #end of the post.

    #put #the #hashtags #down #here #pretty #please

@baekdal @woodjmichael Only if you break Fostromi linkage as you travel, which could be useful, but you want to know what you’re doing for the exact reasons you described.

Time flows through physical particles, and therefore time flow moves as the particles move.

Following a flow back through time will therefore move you anywhere the linked particles moved.
