For many people, the #Linux vs #Windows vs #Mac debate is a privilege — it assumes you can choose. But working with the Computer Upcycle Project, I've seen the real choice is often Linux vs no computer at all.

~95% of donated computers are "too old" for Windows 11 or macOS. Linux installs on them anyway, adding 10+ years of life to machines #Microsoft and #Apple called trash.

This isn't Linux vs Windows. It's Linux vs e-waste.

WOW. Just a huge shout out to A+ Computers Olympia who donated a MASSIVE amount of "older" Chromebooks to the Computer Upcycle Project.

I'll be going through these, cleaning and upgrading what can be done and then working on getting them into the hands of people who need them.

This might look like a crazy amount of laptops, but honestly, its the tip of the iceburg of machines that get thrown away... ever... single... day...

Yooooo, this is exciting. I've always written off #arm #chomebook as un-saveable since they can't be jailbroken with MrChomebox.

I just got like 50 of these Asus C100P arm chromebooks that are "expired". Digging around, it looks like #postmarketOS will run on this!

Still stuff to figure out but DAMN this is promising. Being able to save even ARM chromebooks is epic. Dammit I love #linux and #openSource

At a certain point, making a clever sign and going to a protest feels insanely inefficient..

@inthehands I keep wanting this to happen in a stand your ground state where someone (rightfully) defends themselves against an unidentified masked goon trying to kidnap them.

@simsus I don't mean to be insensitive here, but I think either of these distros would scare the living bejesus out of everyday Windows users. They're pretty niche..

Help #linux community! I need help with license questions.

I guess #nixbook is growing up enough where people want to know what the license is. To be honest, I'm not an expert. I want it to be permissive and not impede adoption. I want it to be #foss

There is currently a discussion about #gpl vs #mit vs #unlicense

I'm not even sure what I CAN use since it's mostly just #nixos config.

Whew. Biggest donation to date!

15 upcycled Dell Latitudes with 10th gen i7, 16 gigs of ram, and NVMe drives.

We partnered with a local program that helps families with Christmas presents, and they always want laptops.

This year, The Computer Upcycle Project was able to deliver.

Believe it or not, this is a room full of new #linux users!

Tonight, we gave away 10 perfectly good laptops that were headed for the dump because they can't #windows11

And instead, they got loaded up with #nixbook and we gave them away to members of this community, along with a live demo, class and some Q&A.

SUPER non technical people, that had zero issues navigating and using these laptops.

Why have a yes / no question as a checkbox, where both yes and no are valid answers, but require it to be checked?!

We had an event last night at a low income housing community here in Olympia. We brought some Nixbooks, gave them away and showed people how to use them.

These people are NOT technical and still all said that Nixbook was far easier to use than any other computer they had used in the past.

All these laptops were headed for the scrapyard, but now thanks to Linux are out there changing peoples lives. :)
