@icedquinn Do consider the user experience when choosing an amp. Analog knobs on amps are fine, until you can't reach them. Leaving the amps "loud" and removing volume from the TV side works in most TVs, but that results in louder hum/background noise.
So a "good" amp you need to run louder might not be any better than a "bad" amp you can run quiet. But like I said, any loud box probably will do lol
@icedquinn The reason could be a faulty connector or poorly designed TV where the 3.5mm output isn't shielded/whatever and has loud hum to it. Surely no modern TVs would cut costs like that, surely?
3.5mm to rca is a valid choice too if find something with only rca plugs. It really doesn't matter in home usage (she says while having full-chain of balanced xlr cables). Especially just for listening to TV, when the broadcasts are just about speech lol Don't overthink it too much. Any loud box probably will do fine.
@icedquinn 400W is bullshit. That's a PA amp power output, not a small speaker lol 15W sounds normal for a small speaker (yes it is loud enough).
How about wall-mounting? There are various brackets you could buy that'll fit a speaker in them. If the speakers lack screw holes for mounting, then two-sided tape will do. Small speakers weight almost nothing so mounting them on walls is pretty easy.
Most active speakers come with a screw hole on the bottom for "tripod" style mounting too.
It's hard to give any actual advice, since I have no idea how much space you have and what sort of height etc you want to have. At least wall-mounting would only require wall space, but of course it also requires the permission to drill holes.
@icedquinn Hmmm... How about just going mono? Could just buy one active speaker. It isn't much cheaper though, since these dirt cheap ones always come in pairs. Better quality though.
I'd still think one good speaker beats two shitty ones lol But I do understand if the idea of having the sound not necessarily coming perfectly balanced annoys you.
Or just figure a way to mount those jbl speakers. Two-sided tape to the rescue? lol
Should be better than any random boombox or pc speakers, and not that much more expensive (since they are active and don't require any amp). Of course those are the cheapest and smallest, but they should be "loud enough" for TV usage lol
@icedquinn Yup, that's one reason I nowadays recommend only active speakers (amp included). There's really no point on buying a separate amp and passive speakers, unless you need to do professional stuff like concerts or venues (although arguably those could be done with multiple active speakers spaced optimally around the place rather than just big ones up front).
Medium-field active speakers can do big home-theaters just fine, don't need to get lured to "hifi" stuff. (Near fields do the same on smaller rooms with a sub (the sub isn't even mandatory). Personally I prefer 4.1 configuration even after I got to try out multiple expensive hi-fi 5.1 and 7.1 systems. Fuck central channels, just incline the front speakers and it'll sound better).
@icedquinn@Hyolobrika@gabriel Homeschooling is great, if you can afford hiring help. I was "homeschooled" until I was 8 and I knew how to read and write fluently and how to do multiplication and divination, draw and do basic crafts and stuff like that. Kids learn very fast if they have a teacher who devotes their time to teach them at their optimal pace. At schools the teacher's attention is divided to 30 people (or more if unlucky), which results in the class moving forward with the slowest student's pace. Or at the worst case the students doesn't get the help they need and falls behind.
It's very easy for a patient parent to homeschool their children UNTIL they get old enough to require teaching on complicated matters the parent isn't fluent in (advanced sciences, foreign languages, orientation towards a job in a field the parent has never worked in etc). It is then possible to hire help and continue with exemplary homeschooling, but let's be honest 99% of parents can't afford it.
I firmly do not believe in homework and "study alone at your own time" school system. I did go to Steiner school which is way more classroom and teacher oriented (kids don't get homework and they don't even have books until mid-teens). Steiner school has some issues too, mainly that it is very art focused and... that brings some weird things to the curriculum lol Great for kids, not so for high school students.
@sun Yeah, I've never been to the US so I don't know how it is over there. Here taxis "just work" no matter if you call them, use the app or walk to them. However! The amount of shady taxis have increased a lot after the taxi field got open for competition when uber started being popular. So it is important to pick a taxi that belongs to a reputable company. Hence why the app is great, since don't have to remember the "good companies".
There are no hidden fees here and no issues with payments. Shady taxis do try the getting lost tactic I suppose. @lucy
@sun Here the taxi companies have apps too. You can order a taxi to a destination from where you are and choose between prepaid or paying at the destination.
Since the app only calls official taxis they speak fluent Finnish and drive a spaceous modern vehicles. Not sure what you need ratings for in that case, since they are all qualified professionals.
No, it isn't cheaper, but it ain't predatory either. And unlike uber the drivers are professionals contracted under a company with all the regulations and protections that follow.
I also always get a professional taxi when visiting Estonia, because they actually are cheap there. And the idea of taking an uber or a shady taxi when in a foreign country is a no no. I don't care if people have generally favourable experiences, I am not risking it. @lucy
I am a victim of "free shipping for over 99e orders!" scam. I mean, I "saved" almost 20e by choosing that and a 5% discount thing that was going on. But still! This was supposed to be a quick shopping trip!
Oh, also it took me 5 hours. Yup. You read that right :blobcatsleepless2:
At least I got some stuff I kinda needed... (read: new shoes lol)
@Jain Drilling the tiles isn't even hard. Just do it slow without the punching/hitting function enabled. It's just I'm a silly kitty who lacked patience and drilled all willy nilly at 3am without bothering to waterproof the holes at all :blobcatgiggle2: Oh and I didn't measure so I did 3 holes only to realize they didn't align and just install the arm using 2 screws :ablobcat3dverified:
At that place I also painted all the walls black so :blobcatlaugh2: The landlords fear me.
Yeah... At my old place I installed a proper shower arm and a huge rain shower, but at this new place I'm trying to not be a terrorist and restrain from drilling the tiles without permission lol So I have to settle with medium sized ones that stay up on the standard holder.
It was one of those big rain shower things made out of chinesium. It cracked open from one edge to spray water all over the ceiling and walls. RIP.
It lasted daily showering for 3-4 years, so I am not too mad that it broke. Still annoying. Thankfully I had the shitty small shower head still saved that came with the apartment. But I really want a big one again damn it!
@icedquinn Okay, at least marble is safe to wash so theoretically it could be worth it if don't put any easily damaged things on the floor so can just hose it down lol Otherwise no way in hell am I going to clean that!
Hmmm... or get some fancy robot cleaner that actually fucking works.
