That dastardly Zuckerberg's at it again! Meta is going to take all my toots and use them to market to me using his devil magic, tempting me to buy the only product it could effectively advertise to me - limited edition vinyl copies of Yukihiro Takahashi's underrated 1983 synthpop album Neuromantic
The funniest possible outcome for Threads/Meta is that they decide not to federate with anyone after all (as well they might not) and everyone will have pissed themselves and got really fucking angry for no reason
They don't even need to federate with Mastodon to destroy it, just talking about doing so has turned the network into a non-stop bellowing and recrimination festival with all its worst traits proudly on display already, mission accomplished lads
@TNLNYC@pinkyfloyd I think the point is that in practice, using the """standard""" that is ActivityPub is apparently reserved only for people and organisations deemed to deserve it.
@mcg@packy@doot I'm not sure what that has to do with federating or defederating, because what the Threads app may or may not collect from its users has exactly sod all to do with what they may or may not be *able* to collect from some random on a completely different server.
@tim@textfiles I think it's fair to treat it as a public forum with no takebacks, which is essentially what it is - the problem as I see it is that that's not properly explained anywhere, most people don't seem to understand it; instead they're fixating on far more tenuous threats that come from outside while the real issues are inherent to the platform.
@demvoter Yep. As I say in the piece, Meta isn't going to try and doxx people or send them death threats, but all the various bad actors who already exist on Fedi damn well want to, and already are, and there's very little anyone can do to identify - let alone stop - them.
@pinkyfloyd@TNLNYC Fedi does have a very strong tendency towards trying to force everyone into its way of doing things rather than accommodating others, something that has been very strongly noted in the past
@chris_e_simpson ah are we onto "I'm suspicious of Meta therefore every raving, factually suspect thing someone comes up with must be taken seriously"? Please do carry on there's not been enough of that on Fedi recently
@doot I hate being put in the position of seeking like I'm sticking up for Meta but I feel like I'm in the same position I am when I stick up for Jeremy Corbyn: "maybe if you guys weren't coming up with insane, ludicrous nonsense all the time I wouldn't have to talk about this"
@OutOnTheMoors Can't think why companies and government agencies might be hesitant to have official presences on minority social networks filled with people that hate them
So many people obviously didn't fucking grow up from 2013 when they saw that the Facebook Messenger app requested camera permissions and, rather than considering that this is because you can use Messenger to take and send photos and make video calls, pissed themselves about Mark Zuckerberg watching them take a dump surreptitiously
Maybe I can summarise my last post for you: just because you can think of a lurid worst case scenario for something doesn't mean it's true or even likely!
IT GETS WORSE!!! APPLE MUSIC GETS MY PAYMENT INFO TOO! I am being watched over by Big Music!
It could just be because if I want to sign up to Apple Music or renew a subscription that I'll need to put my payment details into it and that I might also be able to view my payment details but NO ACTUALLY THEY'RE COMING FOR MY SOUL VIA MY LISTENING HISTORY
Also what is defederating going to do about app permissions you fucking clowns, the only way that Threads having payment info could affect you is if you DMed someone your credit card number you utter dipshits
