Glad to see the Sinn Féin reboot on migration policy. Some people at these protests are violent and racist, others just have valid concerns and don't want any foreigners near them or even in the country at all

A low-key hobby of mine used to be to keep tabs on code editors. Not heavy IDEs, but something in between, almost an IDE but not something huge like Eclipse and preferably native. There were only a handful, and now there are loads. I can't even decipher what's different about them!

@evan I think people are too careful. You’re right to not cosset people and help them look away. This is a very real thing that people should see.

@evan You’re probably already aware of the weaponisation of replies that are only visible to the recipient, the sender, and the sender’s network, as an abuse vector. It sounds to me like related issues, the delinking getting propagated through the network.

@BlackAzizAnansi The reaction to Walt Mossberg’s cold hard assessment of the user experience on Mastodon (which is not the fediverse, but a good slice of it) suggests that some big change in attitude is needed, to stop using complexity and friction to gatekeep people.

@Bloonface It can’t/won’t launch in Europe because of data protection, so the situation is halfway there already.

@evan @anildash @paulmwatson @ummjackson @Gargron I meant more the structure that Anil is referring to - it is confusing for new users and outsiders. Even OSes think that these handles are email addresses.

I'm suggesting that if, for example, there was a landing page and people selected a user name and perhaps the domain appended to that (with terms and conditions depending on the domain selected) then perhaps it would all feel clearer and more seamless to the inexperienced user.

@anildash @paulmwatson @ummjackson @Gargron What if the domain idea could be translated to a Fediverse handle? @anildash.me.dm @Gargron.mastodon.social - A thin layer to remove some friction. Underneath, it would work the same as it does today. It would just require that it be understood by the nodes and UIs in use (I know, I know, it's easier said than done).

It could be a way to streamline sign-on too.
