The host for the @kottke Mastodon account has been struggling to keep the service up (for months now) so I think I need to switch. Any recs? I just want something stable, a bigger instance (for easier federation), a place that's not going random war-block other instances on my behalf (I can manage that myself).
The privatization of Twitter has been a complete triumph! Note the recursive simplicity of this. Recursion is an important concept in computer science so well done there.
But if Twitter ever does manage to achieve some sort of stability and success in the distant future, idiots like this will start crowing that of course Twitter needed to be purged of its dead weight and you gotta break some eggs in order to make an omelette and that THIS WAS THE PLAN ALL ALONG instead of epic and totally unnecessary mismanagement & human suffering that miraculously got corrected somehow.
All day today, I'm answering reader questions using a li'l custom web interface I built for it (oooh, animated gradient!) People are calling it “a rare peak behind the curtain" and “you spelled ‘peek' wrong” and "dude, get back to the regular site stuff already!” So come and check it out. https://kottke.org/about/ama/
A friend who runs a small media company is looking for a part-time backend developer to help them fortify, maintain, and build out their Wordpress-based tech/publishing stack. Any ideas?
I just saw an ad for a product that promises “at-home haircuts that don't look like at-home haircuts" with a pitchman who absolutely looks like he cut his hair at home. Can't stop laughing.
The hill I will die on re: Jan 6th is that we should stop referring to it as an assault "on the Capitol" (a building) and call it an attack on Congress (the legislative branch of the US government composed of duly elected officials who were in danger of being killed/kidnapped for political ends).
