The home secretary seems determined to hype up a peace march as being disrespectful to a peace-remembrance day.

So much so that she's convinced violent nationalists that they need to defend the cenotaph.

From a march for peace, happening the previous day on the other side of the river.

Every time she opens her mouth it's to cause more division and hype up more violence on the streets while she's accusing the peacemakers of being hateful.

    🙄

Now she thinks that the people marching for peace aren't *really* marching for peace, they are marching as an assertion of Islamic primacy like orangemen marching in Ireland.

    😨

What on earth is she doing in government? She is utterly deluded or deliberately dangerously inflammatory.

She's making me want to actually get out of bed and go on the march despite my general apathy, laziness, weird waking schedule, and belief that marches and protests are utterly pointless and always ignored.

Sounds like the hard right nationalists did indeed turn up and disrupt the two minutes silence a the cenotaph, and are fighting with cops as they head to meet the peace march.

Had to launch Chrome and it pops up offering to serve me more relevant ads if I'm turn on some setting.

    No thanks.

I don't really want to see adverts at all, but if there must be adverts then I'd sooner they are irrelevant adverts for things I'll definitely never buy.

The more relevant an advert is the more likely it is to manipulate me into buying something I don't need.

I dunno why the big tech people seem to think we want adverts that are more relevant to us. That's what the manipulating advertisers want, not the what the manipulated advertised-at people want.

It makes sense though. Having a block-button on a troll website ruins the whole point of having the trolls there.

A troll website with a block button is like a motorway with speed-bumps.

If you want a block button maybe try forums that aren't just for trolls?

I mean if it's blocks you're after, there is definitely NOTHING BETTER than #fediverse

We have server-to-server level blocks, user-to-server level blocks, server-to-user level blocks.

We even have petty unnecessary inter-instance blocks based on a single drunken night's over-reaction.

We have so much blocking we have actual soap-opera-style drama about the blockers, and the blocking, and the lying about reasons.

The whole thing is beautiful and astounding and sometimes drives people into institutions for recovery.

Elon isn't quite there yet, but we wish him well when he gets there and good luck to whoever takes over that mess.

And when #twitter finally does #federate like #facebook had to, I expect most of us will probably block it.

Terrible business. Imagine if you'd been printing out business cards with @x on them and then you had to change it to @x1234567898765!

Or if you had @atomicpoet@calckey.social and suddenly the admins changed your handle without asking to something like @atomicpoet@firefish.social.

Threads is the most blatant, desperate data-gathering spyware of the year and no one in the EU is affected, or will be affected any time soon, because their own elected officials passed a law that effectively bans it.

Nice job! Have fun over there in the corporate panopticon.

    @demvoter @stux

Wouldn't rush to do it. Unlikely Threads will federate at all until the autumn, and even then seems likely it'll be with a small whitelist of allowed servers.

Might as well stay where you are until we learn which ones they will actually interact with.

I think a lot of people will be moving instances. Probably more of them away from Facebook-federated ones than towards.

But as I say. No point till the autumn anyway.

@jerry We need to put a rate-limit on all the quit-requests so that it doesn't harm those who are staying.

No more than 600 quitting per day, something like that.

Imagine if you started a blog somewhere and were posting to it for years, gathering an audience, expressing your ideas.

And then one day the service provider just locked your blog behind a login-wall, removing your blog from the digital commons and enclosing is as part of their digital capital.

    That'd really suck wouldn't it?

    Today
    * Reddit ends free API access.
    * Twitter turns off anonymous reading.
    * Youtube is talking about banning ad-blocking users.

The tech industry was living on cheep money and low interest rates, and now they're all afraid to let their precious content get used for AI training.

The walls are going up, the lawful corporate web is collapsing in on itself.

    It comes down to this:

#Fediverse was invented because the oppressed didn't like oligarchs owning and controlling the means of communication.

#bluesky was invented because one of the oligarchs wanted to get around the government telling him what to do.

#nostr was invented because crypto-scammers didn't like Fedi blocking their spam.

I mean roughly. That's probably not really fair on Nostr.

Indeed, the huge majority of them don't even have graphics cards.

But we were talking about desktop linux right? I think that needs a desktop manager.

@evan Everyone should be allowed to program, certainly. Computing machines ought to be rootable and programmable. Schools to teach it should be available. People shouldn't be put-off or discouraged by teachers.

So I agree: everyone should be able to program.

There will never be a world in which everyone has the capability of programming though. And there will likely always be people uninterested in it too.

So I disagree: no, there will always be lots of people who are unable to program.
