@JustinH@evan Ahh gotcha. Yeah, I presume Evan’s referring to general publicness of posts. That seems to be a huge downside of Bluesky—which intentionally wants every post, profile, like, and even block to be public, even to nonusers. I can’t see how that’s tenable for a lot of users who currently have their FB/IG/Twitter/etc set to private. Seems like a recipe for disaster in countless ways, especially in the age of cheap/easy AI data analysis.
@evan Isn’t refusing to transfer power after a free election the act of destroying democracy? I mean, it’s sorta right there in the definition, isn’t it? Destroying democracy to prevent someone else from destroying it?
@laurenshof@evan I didn’t vote, but read the question as “How do you enjoy your home feed here on the Fediverse” (presuming it was a comparison to, say, your home feed on Twitter, etc).
After all, it’s called different things in different apps…and even the web version of Mastodon calls it “all” not “fediverse.” I think the poll wording is unclear.
@evan True. Context is my dad was born in Belfast and immigrated to USA at age 18. He ended up naturalizing while in the Marines. As part of that process, he seemingly “gave up” his UK citizenship. But there doesn’t appear to be a UK law that allows for that. So I derived UK citizenship upon birth, we just didn’t know it (or so is our understanding, we haven’t filed paperwork yet). Because he was born on the isle of Ireland, I can derive Irish citizenship too.
@evan As someone who is about to gain citizenship in two additional countries, I had never considered voting in multiple countries, as a citizen of those countries, simultaneously. If you’re a citizen of only one country, strong yes for me. Not sure what it means to be a dual citizen yet though (should I really have 3x the voting power of someone else?), so only a qualified yes for me, for now, while I ponder.
@evan Interesting! This was definitely not my experience, but I’ve mostly lived in US suburbs.
But smoking? Oh man, it was EVERYWHERE. Same with cigarette butts. Now? Little pockets of them found mostly around isolated smoking sections. And you don’t have to change your clothes after going to a restaurant, or bar, or bowling alley, or…well, you get the idea.
@evan@KevinMarks I’d love a setting that allows for posts to be public for your local server accounts, but optionally restricted beyond that (except for your followers, which you could set to approve first).
Local server communities are a superpower of Mastodon that I don’t think is adequately enough developed.
@mapto@evan@KevinMarks I’m new to this, but my understanding is that restricting the local timeline wouldn’t work (for what I want), as the post privacy settings of “unlisted” or “followers-only” prevent it from being shown in the local feed.
Basically, I want a setting that allows people to “publicly” interact with all local server users, but choose whether those posts were public beyond the local server (except for home feeds of their followers).
@FediTips Do you know of any instances that are focused on a single topic and limit their users’ posts to only those topics?
I’m transitioning a travel photo-sharing community from a closed platform (with similar restrictions) to Mastodon, but am struggling with whether I can effectively keep a “clean” and well-curated federated feed. Wondering if anyone else has tried this, and if so, what their experience has been. Perhaps you know, or know someone else who might?
The best social sites/apps I’m in are heavily moderated, simply because they are focused on one main topic and don’t pretend to be a “platform for everyone.” You don’t get to post about anything outside of the core topic, but that makes it an incredibly valuable community. The sin here is trying to be too big to make huge profits; these companies aren’t about creating true community—or they’d actually build one, not a platform.
