@hailey @whitequark I'm an oldfashioned linux sysadmin, and I avoid containers and most modern projects as far as I reasonably can because of complexity, performance, and maintenance issues.

Maintaining this mastodon instance is an example of me stepping outside of that comfort zone to experience the modern world, but the experience is kinda shit compared to nice stable software like postfix and bind available from the main repo.

@whitequark There is a considerable range of thinking in housecats though, we have one cat who started to sit beside you and pat your leg to be lifted onto the lap after a missed jump and some claws scratching legs hurt his family.

And we have one cat who's grasp of cause and effect is loose at best. She doesn't really like when you go ouch, but you can tell that she's mostly confused by it.

@cwebber Adding to this that anything shorter than 6 months is very fast speedrunning of immigration processes.

If you want to leave use the resources you can find and start working on it sooner rather than later.

Much have changed, now we can trust Debian and Ubuntu to ship security patches to the degree that automated updates is good on (most packages for most) production servers.

@whitequark Yeah, it's tricky, and hard to know if it is old stuff to the people really working on this in UA.

But on the other hand if there is even a 5% chance that this could be a useful way of disabling hundreds of drones, it would be nice if they got it sooner rather than later.

@cwebber Don't wait! Finding a way out that's both legal (you really don't want to get deported back!) and has at most a moderate drop in quality of life (this includes selling possessions to have money in the destination, rather than arriving with empty pockets) will realistically take 6-12 months of hard work.

DNS root is already international in terms of infrastructure.

A split in content would be really harsh to deal with, but dropping the US-owned root servers from roots.hint should be reasonably fast for the majority of resolvers by usage.

The "only" real complications I see are the US-owned browser with the DoH resolving using US companies, and corporate systems being slow to update.
