Probably the high cost of childcare and lack of nation-wide parental leave. In my opinion, one the reasons you had militant parent groups in the USA pushing for schools to reopen is that they wanted the school as child care.
P.S. - Both Mayor Daley's were awful. Will never forgive the younger for basically selling Chicago's parking revenues to a Middle East consortium for 75 years.
t is not saying that are not problems here or in the past. We can't forget and we need to work on improving things moving forward. But the larger image of #Chicago equaling all that is wrong with Godless America are just not true. Those people who feel this way are not concerned about the CPD's history of violence. They probably would say that the CPD is too soft on crime. The narrative is similar to how people use San Francisco or Portland as a signifier of Urban Decay.
@failedLyndonLaRouchite#Chicago has become a signifier of what all those people feel is "wrong" with America. A convenient symbol. And often a racialized one. You say Chicago and people think everyone is living in constant violence everywhere. This is a drumbeat in media (especial right wing media). Most people who hold these stereotypes are coming at it from the Right, not the Left. People I know from home think I live in a Mad Max-hellscape under constant gunfire. That is not the case.
One more note to #DNC participants - if you are looking for a place to pray, mediate, or get some quiet Saint James Episcopal Cathedral is open all day. It is a VERY beautiful space right near most of the hotels.
The Cathedral has 12:10pm services every day this week.
One of the better parts about having the #DNC in #Chicago is seeing the love this city is getting from visitors. Chicago often has a bad reputation in American media but people coming here get to see for themselves how warm, welcoming, and enjoyable this place is!
For those of your visiting for the Convention, welcome to our City! If you are looking for recommendations for things to do, feel free to ask!
@agnes One of my favorite moments from grad school was seeing a poster for a meeting of a Neo-Luddite society on campus. I was hand written in black sharpie and photocopied. I was really tempted to write "Find Us on Facebook" at the bottom....
Nearly every book I read as a child influenced me. I’ve kept this list to books I read aged 16 and up, this one carried on from childhood into adulthood as well. *Where the Sidewalk Ends* by Shel Silverstein
Entry #16 of the #Bookstodon challenge: Choose 20 books that greatly influenced you. One book per day, for 20 days. *No explanations, no reviews, just covers.

At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, #India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance."
