So installed prosody on my small personal instance and finally run my own #XMPP server. This was surprisingly simple and seems pretty lightweight . Well I don’t know if I did it right 😅 but it seems to work.
You can reach me on XMPP with santiago@lema.@org just like my email.
I had an epiphany last night about something in the nginx config and after sorting that, all the optional XEP listed also pass!
Now to convince wife and kids to use it for our group chat... they really don't want to install any more apps, because I'm "being difficult" because they already use whatsapp 😑
The main reason I'm impressed with it over matrix, is reliable notifications. It just works. So far, anyway.
Thank you to the people that replied to my post last week suggesting I try xmpp after the matrix server we used shut down. I had written it off as an old platform for nerds, but it's... actually really good ❤️
:blobcatstop: 🤐 Leia a imagem. :thinkhappy:
@jwz has some thoughts on #Signal and I think he is right. Nice Logo, btw :)
jwz schrieb den folgenden Beitrag Tue, 08 Apr 2025 22:07:51 +0200 Because of the ongoing fucktastrophe, the cries of "Use SIGNAL!" are constant and unavoidable. And I get it, it may be the least-bad option in a sea of terrible options. If, that is, you choose to ignore the advice of "don't use your phone for that shit" (the Stringer Bell Rule).
But out of curiosity, because I haven't been keeping up, has the Signal Corporation addressed: ...
@daniel@gultsch.social@samueljohnson@mstdn.social Going even further, you do not even have to trust any server: just run your (or your collective) own #XMPP server or pay someone to set it for you, federating or not. Anyway, then you choose the software the server runs and each user also is free to choose their XMPP client.
Looks like Dino is enabling #OMEMO by default for the next release¹. I think that was the last of the major #XMPP clients to do so. Hopefully we can now put the "But XMPP is not encrypted by default" debate to rest.
You are encouraged to self-host #XMPP but you are not required to. We try to make self hosting as easy as possible. I think it is one step above hosting your own website but way easier than hosting your own e-mail.
If you are medium tech-savvy I recommend getting your own domain and going for an XMPP provider that let’s you bring your own domain (for example: https://account.conversations.im/domain/) this gives you the flexibility to self host or switch providers later.
You can put web+ap URIs into a message (or room description) and ideally a click on those will open your Mastodon client. However if no installed app supports those (the only app that I’m aware of is Fedilab) Conversations will open a browser instead.
Currently no app will create web+ap links but it is fairly easy to handcraft them.
