I find gold to have no real intrinsic value besides being a good conductor. You can't eat it. It doesn't sustain life. When shit hits the fan are you more likely to accept a trade from someone who has a bottle of water or a gold bullion? It all still relies on a functional infrastructure to have any value. If the infrastructure goes to shit, so does the value, and then almost any value can be applied to it.
