I think I can live quite happily in most major east coast cities. It would take a lot for me to move to another west coast city. Just vibes. I like density

@skinnylatte how are you enjoying Boston? Sad I can’t make tomorrow’s meetup. I’ll be on a little New England island in the Atlantic for a week and my ferry leaves at noon.

@fembot the west coast has a lot of things going for it, density is not one. i don't think that's insulting? it's a fact!

@skinnylatte Power to you! But why insult an entire coast?

i think i spent the last 7 years thinking i was kind of depressed as an immigrant, but i think i'm just depressed to live in a part of the country that needs cars

@juergen_hubert yes, i have so far avoided: needing a car to get anywhere (or needing to get into a car at all), but i am aware that only 0.0001% of the people here get to live like that

I did not know what "car dependency" meant until I visited the USA. That was a _massive_ culture shock.

@skinnylatte Happiest I feel is when I get to ride a bicycle around but a lot of cars deciding to try taking that away lately. 😢

@garrett cycling is a little nicer on the west coast. but the car situation is also not fun.

@fembot well, take portland for example. everybody says it's a great city. it is. but it is just not a city i could ever foresee myself living in happily. the situation with the sun (and the lack of it) makes it impossible. i can't even consider it. i would be morose and depressed. to the extreme. the rest of the city just doesn't vibe with me either. i feel like that about most of the west coast. even san francisco. i never loved it. it's home, but it's just not right for me.
some people are just drawn to different things.

@skinnylatte True, less density. Is that what you meant by vibes? Left coast is for sure different. No harm done, btw, I think I get what you're saying.

@skinnylatte Haha plenty understandable. (But it can also be perspective! I've never had a car and switching from Orange County after two decades to SF was rather an upgrade. :-D )

this isn't a 'you shouldn't have your car'! thing, this is a 'i have great culture shock at having to consider automobiles as part of my life here and i haven't quite fully gotten over it'. it just hasn't been a part of my life the way it is for many.
i am much happier being able to rely on trains and buses all day (yes i know the bay area has trains, trust me i have all their sweatshirts) as an *everyday* thing i don't have to think about.
i also just really want to live in brooklyn, and maybe nowhere else. ;/

@jawnsy i'm a person who is very affected by my urban surroundings and things to do, and i am not really into sf for those reasons. the nature bits help, but it doesn't make up for the huge lack i feel in dining, culture, transit

@skinnylatte I was just in NYC and went to a botanic garden my friend recommended in the Bronx that required walking up 1/3 mile of streets missing sidewalks from the Metro North station, so I'm salty about you writing off the Bay Area as too car dependent and New York not (but I get it)

that pink dragon again, of all places...
@skinnylatte i was a new driver the first time i went to brooklyn (drove myself) and THREE random people walking by on the street stopped to help me parallel park. like it became a collaborative effort between these unaffiliated random people on a whim. this was years ago but very good vibes from brooklyn

@Andres4NY @scott well parts of south and east brooklyn are also... car city
i would probably not live in those places, but they are at least extremely diverse and fun. bay ridge had the energy and vibes of oakland and each area is so dynamic and wonderful.

@scott @skinnylatte tbh like half of Queens is pretty car dependent (but also lots of it isn't; I have a hunch, but not proof, that western queens is more dense than brooklyn overall?)
