Not a particularly spicy take, but here goes: I think Lunduke has a net-negative effect on the FOSS community. By damaging the reputation (deserved or not) of major projects, he alienates more people than he converts. Worse, I think he drives the very division he claims to be wanting to eliminate. I would not be surprised if many FOSS projects become more overtly hostile (or at least defensive) in light of past engagement. I worry that he is leveraging long-standing resentment (justified or not) to attack FOSS, rather than to actually build it up to be what many of us would like it to be.
@sun@gabriel Much like the FOSS community members who despise him and drive off anyone who doesn't want to play their political games just to contribute to software.
@wowaname@freesoftwareextremist.com@gabriel@fedi.libresolutions.network the fact you can't even say lunduke's name in official comm channels in most FOSS projects is a very big indication of who has all the power in this (it's lunduke). he's treated like the boogyman who causes the gnome trannies to die if you say his (lunduke) name 3 times in one post.
@gabriel@fedi.libresolutions.network I disagree, I think he's a net positive by exposing the insane people (shaming them into silence) and making a space for moderates and the apolitical to be able to contribute meaningfully to FOSS.
@gabriel I think he has a right to do what he does. If some public organization (*starring at "Linux Foundation"*) has problems people should discuss them instead of hiding them, because otherwise problems won't be solved. Problems are solved when they are discussed
All he ever posts about nowadays is how "woke" or whatever fucking perceived conspiracy theory he made up is ruining free software.
I assume the only people who actually watch this culture war rage bait slop that only exists to divide us are the same type of people who unironically watch Alex Jones.
That's exactly what he wants because that just type of stuff just validates what he's saying and givs him more screenshots of people hating on him to talk about in his videos.
I advise to instead just ignore him and pretend he doesn't exist and he will just go away.
In ye olden days we used to say "Don't feed the trolls". It applies here.
He correctly indentifies Lunduke as a misleading troll as well. He's absolutely right. Under the guise of being "opinionated" or "Conservative" he is lying about people and moreover does harm by hijacking legitimate criticism of organisations and then politicising it (for instance, framing the issues in terms like "woke" rather than corrupt).https://techrights.org/n/2025/10/01/Bad_Actors_Abusing_the_Free_Software_Community_Vandalising_It_U.shtml
@SuperDicq@rude@gabriel > which is why people think climate change or mitigation thereof is "political" rather than scientific in nature. The same is true for many other things, such as women's rights and abortion.
"things I like aren't political you can't argue about them"
Sorry but this guy's a dope.
Lunduke is a bad actor but at the end of the day he's got screenshots.
He obviously cares about software, his career and older work e.g., conference talks, history of Linux, etc is undeniable. Then he got unpersoned from the entire foss community for being mildly conservative. If you want him to start contributing to software and the foss community in a productive and meaningful way again instead of sniping from the outside, all you have to do is let him :whaaaa:
@SuperDicq@rude@gabriel it's childish to not consider that there are thousands of details in each of your positions that have huge political implications that can't just be written off as worth it based on vibes
@gabriel things i like were declared as deprecated garbage. efforts to have them continue were sabotaged for political reasons. unrelated political bullshit was pushed so much into software that it started to seep out every crevice. they tried to cancel RMS over fabricated accusations. vincent canfield got beaten up for running a mail server with edgy domains. those responsible are smug about all these things.
so, as the place got thoroughly ruined anyway, i just don't really care anymore.
@bonifartius@gabriel > vincent canfield got beaten up for running a mail server with edgy domains. if it was the chaos computer club thing it wasn't quite that simple. he shitposted too hard and they told him not to come back next time. he showed up anyway, and shitposted too hard once again.
@nicholas@gabriel@rude@SuperDicq I don't t think that justifies his repeated "anyone who crirticizes israel is anti-Semitic" crap, I don't even think he believes it, he's just using it as a battering ram on them. It's shitty and dishonest and basically unnecessary because he wouldn't have any material to work with if the people he were talking about weren't actually snakes.
@sun@nicholas@gabriel@rude@SuperDicq after watching him hideusly misrepresent some milquetoast thing i actually new about, and then switch to members only, it became obvious to me the guy washed out of foss and is just trying his luck as a rage baiting grifter
@jeff@gabriel He always had a mixed-bag of takes, imo. I generally agree with his anti-woke stance, but he also has some really bad takes like real ID for certain sites or him quitting LBRY/Odysee because one feature video dared to have the s-bomb in the title.
@jeff@gabriel To be fair, he did propose a solution in the form of purchasable cards with serial numbers that you could buy at a gas station or something to prove that you are a human or adult.
Couldn't agree with you more on that, amazing that he spends all day every day decrying the same tactic when used by the 'woke', then turns around and does it himself when it comes to his bugaboo.
@SuperDicq@rude@sun@gabriel I'll have to see more but he does seem accurate from the little I've actually consumed, i do remember one thing that he did make worse than it was but not much more
@nicholas@aklp.club I'm sorry but the "mildly conservative" people that I know do not go on the internet to build their entire personality around "the woke leftists are destroying society" every single hour of the day.
Imagine if you will a creature so retarded, so vile, and so shortsighted that it can visibly see it's replacements (artificial wombs and robotics) being made and doubling down on its behavior that has led to this point.
@nicholas@aklp.club I've seen a few videos of him about a few topics because I was interested in what he had to say about it but I do not actively keep up with him.
From the videos that I have seen of him I know exactly what kind of rhetoric he abuses and what kind of message he tries to convey.
Wierd cause you just said you never actually watch him. Sounds like you just follow some rage-bait hater content that politicizes and blows out of proportion everything 🤔
@nicholas@aklp.club Certainly you must agree adding the "extremist" epithet isn't an exercise in objective description, no?I don't agree, they are synonymous.
I would be shocked if lunduke has ever called himself far right. That's just as loaded and derogatory a term; unlike 'woke' which was actually how that faction of the left self identified.
Certainly you must agree adding the "extremist" epithet isn't an exercise in objective description, no?
@Suzu@detroitriotcity.com@nicholas@aklp.club You're not exposing anything of value if you always spin the narrative to make it about identity politics and culture war bullshit.
@SuperDicq@nicholas as for Lunduke himself, heh, idk. On one hand, it's good to have someone exposing crazy shit happening in FOSS projects. On the other hand, I do agree he tends to exaggerate things and more than once I have seen one of his videos and thought "omg the project is absolutely ruined, there is no way to recover from this", and then when I went and take a deep look, it was actually a nothing burger.
@SuperDicq@nicholas recent events have shown us that all this data is very unreliable, because both media and research centers are very, very, very reluctant to label any kind of violence as left wing related, and they will try to find any excuse to say some deranged tranny who shoot catholic school kids is actually a "right wing extremist".
that's been something of a known issue for generations but people have struggled to pin a name to it. malcolm x called them "white liberals" (but he was also racist.)
a small number of right wingers are aware of the same problem in their aisle (the 'christian nationalists' who don't really love christ or follow christs teachings they just seek power while wearing the religion as a skinsuit.)
@nicholas@gabriel@rude@SuperDicq@sun@mischievoustomato the "right" only sometimes uses it that way. they generally don't know what they're talking about. i've seen them call something "woke" when there's a gay or enby in a story (ironically the game even lets you kill said enby but they were too busy being triggered to play long enough to discover that.)
I think that's a good definition of the way the right uses it now, but to the original 'woke' leftists it was a reinterpretation of Marx' class consciousness applied across the whole spectrum of intersectional axes.
