My New York Chinese food plan: focus on the Chinese foods I can't easily get in the Bay Area. That means less Cantonese / Toishanese, more Fuzhou food. We get almost no Fuzhou food in the Bay Area (maybe LA? But Queens / Brooklyn is a hub of Fuzhou food.. globally)

I even saw an incredible high end Fuzhou restaurant in Brooklyn (Nin Hao) which looks like exactly the sort of place I like. Must be nice to have recent immigration (recent Chinese immigrants can't afford SF, so any exciting new Chinese foods are out in Fremont / Millbrae).

Also more Caribbean food. I have a few Jamaican faves but also want to try a few Haitian restaurants.

Their Japanese food scene is also unfairly great. Pizza. Argh. So jealous

there's more than five hunan, henan, yunnan restaurant. there's great uzbek food. there's amazing yemeni food.

there's more than five places in one block doing stone-milled, made to order cheung fan. there's many styles of ramen. there are nepali ramen places. there's legitimately great high end indian food (semma, etc). every classic fine dining cuisine is well represented here.

there's more than one really special thai restaurant, way different from anything you'd get anywhere else (other than thai town LA).

there are lesbian malaysians making coffee exactly the way I grew up drinking (at kopitiam).

haven't even started on the museums, music, jazz, theater yet.

i felt like it was a cruel joke when my friend asked me if i wanted trinidadian-chinese food or cuban-chinese food. every hyphenate in the world, you can find here.

anecdotally i also have way more people from my past lives who ended up here. friends from yemen, syria, bangladesh, singapore, china, india, are all here, much more than in SF. every single one of them says this is their home.

there are very few places in the world that speak so loudly to me. this one is the loudest.

@skinnylatte Curious what dishes you'll try for Fuzhou. Post it and I'll see if I can find it here in Chicago.

@andrew773 i'm sure there will be some, but queens / brooklyn have 98% of global migration from fuzhou, so the numbers game is strong.

@fembot i always thought i would move to nyc over sf. i didn't like sf at all when i visited. nyc is much more of my scene and pace. unfortunately i have a lot of nature hobbies (and jobs) now that i guess that equation has changed a bit. one day.

speaking of fuzhou food.. my chinese massage guy in SF is from fuzhou and he fucking hates the chinese food in SF. every time i see him he's like 'fuck this place i hate the chinese food here' and i'm like

      dude

      i know what you mean

      (lol)

SF Chinese food is hard if you are not a fan of cantonese food. i mean, i like cantonese food, and the quality of that is pretty high, but i'm also much more used to having many, many more types of chinese regional cuisines and find the Cantonese / Toishanese food culture in SF a little limiting.

one day soon i'll write something about how 2020s chinese food in america is shaped by the twin forces of San Gabriel Valley and Brooklyn / Queens.

if you look at a map of where people go after crossing the southern border... it's a 50/50 split for the west or east coast, and nowhere else in America. San Gabriel Valley, or Brooklyn and Queens.

@KevinMarks @ranjit Yemeni coffee seems to be a national thing now. I’m glad to see. Widely available in sf / Oakland (even.. Marin!) and in Detroit for sure. I really like the variety they bring.

@skinnylatte don't sleep on Trini food!!! you've got to go to Bed-Stuy and try some vegetable roti and doubles. my favorite is Ali's Trinbago Roti Shop on Fulton Street although it's takeout only

@mattmangels I’m generally depressed by Malaysian food in the Bay Area but that spot is decent. The better options are far away (Pleasanton and San Jose). If you’re going to be in Millbrae I would go to Royal feast. Excellent Peking Duck and Chinese baked goods and Sichuan food
