@phnt@fluffytail.org @fossdd@chaos.social I'm talking about the donation reminder. I think Anubis is a lot more major, as it requires the user to enable javascript and also does not work with addons like JShelter.

@newt@stereophonic.space @vokainen099@cawfee.club @fossdd@chaos.social @phnt@fluffytail.org I'm not opposed to free software development being paid for by large corporations. Actually on the contrary, I think that's a good thing. People deserve to be paid to develop free software.
What rubs the wrong way is the larping pretending to be a poor foundation that desperately needs the donations of regular people to stay alive.
This is completely wrong. The GNOME Foundation has plenty of cash and is being actively funded by Google, Redhat, Canonical and many other well established for-profit entities who got plenty of cash.
It honestly reminds me of the disgusting Jimmy Wales banners on Wikipedia.In conversation permalink 翠星石 likes this.Johnny Peligro repeated this. -

>The GNOME Foundation has plenty of cash and is being actively funded by Google, Redhat, Canonical and many other well established for-profit entities who got plenty of cash.
No, it has not. Their budget for 2024 was ~$550k (https://blogs.gnome.org/foundation/2024/10/10/budget-and-economic-review/). This isn't enough to fund GNOME development, but that's not the purpose of GNOME Foundation any way. Just like it isn't the purpose of Linux Foundation to fund Linux (hence it doesn't).
GNOME Foundation mostly spends money on maintaining their gitlab, organising events, and similar stuff. If you read the link above, only $200k directed into development (grant money).
>It honestly reminds me of the disgusting Jimmy Wales banners on Wikipedia.
I dunno. KDE people made this one time pop-up (once you click on it, it will never show up again) in KDE and people actually went and donated them cash. Seems fine to me. Also, you're free to patch it out if you wanna.

A thought provoking question. TBH, open source is just a bad business model.
In a strange way, it breaks the relationship between the user and the developer.
Most of the time, when I've gone to donate to a project I use a lot, I find that the dev has depreciated the project, decided to take the project in a direction I do not want, or has decided that they will be using their project for politics. In all of those cases, I am usually forced to go look for a different tool lol!
In any case, a project I'll recommend donating to is, blender, it has been great year after year. On the other hand, they care about the users, and have business adoption, so they will continue whether or not individuals give to them or not.
Same for godot, though they are more political now, and it may be better to support one of their forks.In conversation permalink -

It is a bad business model for small teams. It's a great business model for large corpos like Red Hat or Google. Android being open source allowed Google to quickly kill all competition and almost entirely own the smartphone market in order to later close Android down.
Ironically, :rms: and his freetard foot snack connoiseurs ended up helping to create the greatest proprietary monopolies in the history of mankind. Google runs Linux, after all.In conversation permalink Attachments

"Uh, I need to get this working, uh I need to get Lutris working, uh, I need to get my wineprefix working, uh why isn't this working"
By the time that drama is said and done, the group call has already moved to playing another video game.

@SuperDicq @newt @Inginsub @fossdd @dcc @PurpCat @vokainen099 @hazlin If you want the full lawyer speak version of how RH distributes source code, here it is.
If you want source code, you either have to sign up for the developer program, which is free, but has the same license agreement (one of them) as enterprise customers with the audit I mention above.
Or alternatively you can dig through CentOS Stream's Gitlab repo, which also has all the source code, but it's not tagged in an easy way. You can't go to the rhel branch and grab that. You have to match package versions and commits and that's how you get exact copies.
Or another way is to also download UBI docker images and script:

@SuperDicq @Inginsub @fossdd @phnt @PurpCat @vokainen099 @hazlin there is no such thing as "wrong" here when everyone fully understands what is actually being referred to. Linux is a family of operating systems. GNU-based systems are a subset of it, albeit a small one. Only a small vocal minority of furry-loving GNU zealots keeps insisting that GNU has to be inserted into every mention of Linux.
By the way, I do have experience of Linux kernel development and I find it funny that almost none refers to this project as Linux. It's almost always the kernel, sometimes the Linux kernel (when other kernels are mentioned). Linux referring to the OS rather than the kernel is pretty much ubiquitously accepted.In conversation permalink Johnny Peligro likes this. -

Current versions of Qt are OSS immediately I think and updates to LTS versions are postponed by I think 6 months. Still better than dealing with the garbage that is Gtk while still having cross-platform support.In conversation permalink Johnny Peligro likes this. -

I don't know why everyone makes such a big deal out of this. Qt is still open source and new versions are gonna stay open. this is how i feel currently. so far, I'm in tinkering-ish mode given I run gentoo, but so far stuff has worked well. On day 2 (when I already had gnome running), I installed steam and a game and gamed just fine, but I don't play much. That said, if I were to get annoyed at Gentoo, I might just call it quits, get a macbook when I can, and play what little I do on it or just have a 2nd machine to game on.In conversation permalink -

That is a huge budget.
>Just like it isn't the purpose of Linux Foundation to fund Linux (hence it doesn't).
The purpose of the Linux Foundation is to get away with infringing Linux's copyright.
>GNOME Foundation mostly spends money on maintaining their gitlab, organising events, and similar stuff. If you read the link above, only $200k directed into development (grant money).
If mere git hosting it burning huge amounts of money, you're doing something wrong.
There is no reason for any funding to be directed to events when it should be directed to programming.
No decent DE ever begs for money in a notification - that can go in the credits menu.In conversation permalink -

All free licenses give freedom 0 - thus you do have the freedom to use the software however you want with free software.
Merely because a license doesn't grant you the power to take freedom doesn't mean you are a being restricted - rather restrictions are being prevented.
If you feel like you are being restricted by a strong copyleft license like the AGPLv3-or-later, you should bring up the issue with the relevant party - your government.In conversation permalink -

Android uses no GNU package - the only similarity to GNU/Linux is that Android uses the same kernel - Linux.
Merely because google used GNU/Linux to develop and build Android doesn't mean that GNU had anything to do with the monopoly google has created - google could have achieved the same thing with a lot more work.In conversation permalink -

When a character encoding library can't be bothered to check if the character encoding you are telling is the input is actually correct, you know you've made something horrible.
Checking the character encoding is a waste of time - as heuristics only works for ASCII and UTF-8 - other multibyte character sets are mostly indistinguishable - therefore it's up to the user to guess what retarded character encoding the source is in and check the output to see if that was correct.
> glibc breaking ABI on basically every minor release has become a meme at this point.
glibc's ABI has been forward compatible for years.
There was a minor change in binutils to adjust the default elf data headers (which can be modified) that had been announced as planned for a long time and the only thing that ended up breaking was digital handcuffs for proprietary malware that hardcoded the headers - therefore such malware ceasing to run was only a feature.In conversation permalink -

@newt @hazlin @vokainen099 @fossdd @Inginsub @PurpCat @phnt @SuperDicq >there is no such thing as "wrong" here when everyone fully understands what is actually being referred to.
The very issue is that PEOPLE DO NOT - THEY ACTUALLY THINK LINUX IS AN OS.
>Linux is a family of operating systems. GNU-based systems are a subset of it, albeit a small one.
Linux is a kernel - there are a handful of operating systems that happen to share the same kernel; Android, GNU/Linux, GNU/GNU Linux-libre and BusyBox/Linux (there are a few other small systems that happen use that kernel, but those are too minor to bother mentioning).
For real computers, primarily GNU/Linux is used, for phones primarily Android is used and for routers, primarily BusyBox/Linux is used.
>It's almost always the kernel, sometimes the Linux kernel (when other kernels are mentioned). Linux referring to the OS rather than the kernel is pretty much ubiquitously accepted.
YES, PEOPLE ARE SO CONFUSED THAT THEY DON'T EVEN REALIZE THAT LINUX IS ONLY A KERNEL AND THEREFORE THEY ASSUME THAT THE OS IS LINUX AND THAT THE KERNEL IS A SEPARATE PART OF LINUX.
For most OS's, the kernel is developed as a sub-project and doesn't have a particular name, thus the naming is typically; "the OpenBSD kernel" for example.
In GNU's case, another group decided to develop a kernel for GNU and give it a name and of course the most buzzwordy possible name was found and a cult of personality was formed around Linus - Linus+x or the Linux cult was formed - with the goal of assigning credit for "everything Linus has done for us", even though GNU had developed the OS since 1984 and all Linus did was start developing the last needed piece - making GNU/Linux or LiGNUx or just GNU.
The result is as follows;
Reality Proprietary confusion
Linux --> "Linux kernel"
GNU --> "Linux"
GNU/Linux --> "Linux".
GNU/Linux on mobiles --> "Linux phones"
Android --> "That isn't Linux"
Installing GNU on Android --> "Linux on Android"
Installing GNU on Windows without Linux (GNU/kWindows) --> "Windows Subsystem Linux"In conversation permalink -
