     @anemone @sun @feld You can deal with VPNs easily. 99% of them run on UDP and almost nothing runs on UDP besides DNS, NTP and BitTorrent. DNS and NTP aren't encrypted, so they could easily QoS encrypted UDP traffic into being unusable.
     
     You can run VPNs over TCP, but then you are running TCP on TCP which creates problems with retransmission getting stupid.

     The issue isn't technical, it's political. There are too many "legitimate" uses of VPN (and more generally, encrypted UDP) that trying to ban it is going to make a bunch of problems you didn't expect.

     Airport security "works" because you're already going through the airport, you're already doing SOME security, now a dude is gonna touch your balls.
     
     This is more like trying to get the US to switch to the Metric system, it seems easy enough on it's face, but when you try there are a billion problems that all emerge and conspire to fuck you over. The internet is REALLY complex, even China doesn't manage to ban VPNs and they're quite motivated and their political system is pretty simple, in the west this is just flat out impossible.

     @cjd @anemone @feld @sun China already dealt with this (mostly). Just block the ones that don't have an agreement with you as the government. John Doe can still connect to a VPN when he doesn't trust the cofeshop WiFi and the state still gets the data. And with corporate VPNs which do certainly have a use case, those are usually based around a cert, so either hand the cert to the government or involve them in some other way.
     
     In another thread about UK/VPNs and others I've said this:
     If they go full China and build a nationwide firewall, they have everything they need. But step 1 is making it illegal in the first place, then complaining that people are circumventing their "measures", which creates a pretext for creating it.

     Video streaming uses UDP.
     
     SIP calls use RTP (UDP with or without encryption).
     
     Videoconferencing uses UDP (dTLS).
     
     Many other protocols use UDP.
     
     
     It is too costly to block UDP, but with enough computing resources and routers in the right places it is possible to aggressively fingerprint UDP sessions and block the sessions suspected to be an unauthorized tunnel.
     
     
     It is possible to unwrap the inner TCP session (openssh does that for TCP tunneling) and tunneling things over TCP via ssh isn't hard (although China's firewall can fingerprint ssh tunnelling and kill the connection - but that sort of sabotage won't be tolerated in less proprietary countries).
     
     There are always bypasses - for example tunneling the connection over a TLS session indistinguishable from a website, or a dTLS session indistinguishable from a video call.
