Back to 3 sewing machines, LOL. The price was right (free on curb), and I have a treadle in need of a machine. I think this is an 1879 machine or so converted to electric in the 1930's or 1940's. I accumulate projects as fast as I complete them, ha ha. I am going to de-electrify this machine and cut a custom hole and build a support in the desk with treadle I have. #sewingmachinerepair #sewingmachine

@msbellows @MsMerope @Gorfram @ai6yr @douglasvb @cvvhrn We had tinsel, snow, used pHisoHex and pHisoDerm, and more. Dad decided the solution to dentists was to make us chew fluoride pills. Mom wanted perfect plants, so she used toxic pesticides, including DDT, getting furious whenever one was banned. I remember when lead paint was defended for its bright colors.
Was the flocking we used to make snowy window scenes using stencils toxic? Who cared? Not parents.
OTOH, I was trained to run some water out of the faucet before drinking any, to reduce its lead content.
We inhaled leaded gasoline at every fill-up with those nozzles without a system to suck the vapors back into the tank.
So, with all of the above, our parents gave us guns to play with.
All of this was the birth swaddling of rock & roll.

I think I absorbed all my toxicity from regularly playing in the water at Crown Beach in Alameda. (I guess I should note- this was in the 70's and early 80's)Who can I sue for my faulty thyroid?

@msbellows @douglasvb @MsMerope @cvvhrn @ai6yr Holy cow - that looks exactly like what my family used on our Christmas tree for a few years in the late 1960's. Ours was marketed under the name "Angel Hair."
It may have been healthier than the lead tinsel it replaced, but it was not nearly so pretty- there's genuinely nothing like the drape and gentle sheen of lead tinsel. My mom didn't buy the "Angel Hair" out of preference - the tinsel was unavailable because so much lead was needed for bombs to drop on Vietnam.*
It was only 2 or 3 years until PVC plastic tinsel strips became available, and our trees could be nearly as pretty again.
*The moment Mom told 5-yo me that marks the beginning of my (nearly) life-long anti-war convictions.

@MsMerope @cvvhrn @ai6yr we've all heard of tech bros but before tech bros there were asbestos bros 🤣
It is a really cool mineral. Too bad it's mega deadly when inhaled 😬

@MsMerope @cvvhrn @ai6yr there's a song on the Dr Dimento Christmas CD that has a line about asbestos children's sleepwear 😅😬
Meanwhile I'm waiting until the first rains of fall to go explore the asbestos hazard zone in the BLM Clear Creek Unit near me.

I'm kinda afraid to look up what they made these portable boxes out of in 1920 through 1940. Fake leather? Likely going to toss this box. Don't trust most materials between 1910 and 1950 for not being some kinda toxic LOL. #antique

@Gorfram @MsMerope @msbellows @ai6yr @douglasvb @cvvhrn I don't recall them at all growing up. People smoked everywhere. There was a political battle when they were introduced.
Cigars were usually frowned upon in restaurants, but people lit them up at times. My father would occasionally smoke a pipe after dinner.
Although I flew a couple of times, I don't remember lit cigarettes on a plane. Thankful for that.

@MsMerope @steter @Gorfram @ai6yr @douglasvb @cvvhrn I longboarded Old Tunnel Road in the Berkeley hills in the Seventies. Three miles of banked curves with a steep straightaway at the end. Never thought about wearing a helmet; the percussive skull bongo was just part of the sport. My physician father and nurse mother didn't bat an eye, either.

@douglasvb @ai6yr @Gorfram @MsMerope @steter @msbellows @cvvhrn my first trip to Australia with my late wife was December 2020 for our honeymoon, and we flew with Garuda so we could have a few days in Bali. Shortly out of (I think) LGW the no smoking light goes out and everyone around us lights up - ~17 hours of that. We had no idea it was a thing. 😬

Us kids used to "swim" between the front & back seat of our pickup & through the pass-through to the truck camper, then climb up into the overcab sleeping area, while going down the two-lane highway at 50-60 mph.
Pretty sure Dodge pickups didn't even offer seatbelts as an option back then.
