You can farm them yourself but it looked like a little too much trouble for me; you have to keep them in the house because they can't take heat or cold. I am simply not having a worm farm in my personal abode.

     @p @Ergo you may or may not know this, but the chiggen you get at restaurants or at the store comes from Cornish Cross broilers that are 7-8 weeks old. this breed is designed to grow fast and be slaughtered very young. even the small operations that raise them on pasture have to supplement their feed with some kind of protein. no broiler will reach market weight and also be as tender as people expect without supplemental protein, and if they're allowed to run around catching bugs their muscles get tough. the big chiggen farms raise them in giant enclosures where they can't run.

     @Ergo @LawrenceGerald Ah, yeah. Chickens just eat the bugs, they love bugs. They are descended from some tree-climbing jungle bird from Southeast Asia, you'd expect them to eat bugs. Nearly everything in a jungle either is a bug or eats bugs.

     @LawrenceGerald @Ergo Well, no, you give them seeds, they find their own bugs. They'll eat dried-out corn, which gives you something to do with your corn besides moonshine, and like I said, they love sunflowers and you can just plant sunflowers by their coop, grab one and toss it in.

     @p @Ergo I used to sell pastured meat and I had to explain to people a lot that a plump tender chicken that had only eaten bugs and grass didn’t exist, and if it did it would cost as much as foie gras (around $100/lb)

     That is subsistence farming, and is absolutely how it works. What I have said I learned from my grandfather, whose youth was spent subsistence-farming in Appalachia (and who carried on recreationally farming). You let them eat bugs or whatever, you give them seeds or corn (everybody grew corn), you have to have anti-weasel countermeasures, tarp over the coop when it snows, etc.
     
     Siinclair (on fedi, semi-active nowadays) has some chickens, apparently past four hens he was getting more eggs than he could eat and he took it down to four so he stopped having to push free eggs at people. Posted photos of his coop after a storm. You could ask him what he fed them.

     Yes, I'm aware. They are also safe to eat, but are not, as I understand it, very tasty. (I have no interest in empirically verifying this.)
     
     Whole animals have recently been popular for feeding your dogs, or at least I knew of a few people doing it in LA. Boil plucked chickens (with the organs), run it through the meat grinder.

Kibble is a lot cheaper--alot alot--but I have one dog that just barfs it up, no matter what kind, and I've had other dogs that always had skin and ear issues that could have been grain. I'm certainly not spending a bunch of $ at the vet to verify that, since they're all doing so well on the raw food. But my husband winces at the monthly bill.

     Yeah, it's crap. Dog is dead but I still have one of the cats, he eats shit from a can, but every grocery store with a butcher sells big buckets of chicken gizzards/livers/feet/whatever for practically nothing, so I give him some boiled chicken offal once in a while, and he loves that shit. (Dogs will eat whatever you give them whenever they get it, but a cat, you know, if he's had too much liver, he'll leave the liver where it is, so you can more or less let them self-regulate.)

     Yeah, I think something happened with pet food standards the last ~5 years, a lot of dog food seems to bother dogs.

     @p @Ergo I buy it from a company called Texas Tripe and they sell it ground in 2 or 5 lb chubs. Pretty convenient tho we had to buy a dedicated chest freezer for it. They have a delivery model where you meet the truck. I'm out in the Central Texas boonies so I have to drive a ways but the shipping would be $50 so it works out.
     
     Absolutely no grocery stores anywhere in Texas have butchers anymore, it all comes from some central location, but offal has become more popular and I see it in the frozen section now.

     Weird. In LA, like every grocery store has a butcher back there grinding sausages. I don't know about Texas but when I drove through in January I stopped at this random grocery store because it had a barbecue pit; I assume there was a butcher but I didn't get any groceries. (I was on a road trip and I wanted some smoked brisket. To hell if I roll down the 10 all the way through Texas and I don't get some proper barbecue before I get to the South and I'm among the people that would rather be 300lbs. than eat or drink something that doesn't have corn syrup in it).
