the biggest thing I have to keep saying is that there is NOTHING special about base 10. You "feel" like it is easy to divide by 10, but I was thinking about customary cooking measurements - how it is essentially a base 12 system. People USED to have no problem -

I remember learning octal and hex in school and having this realization that there was nothing essential or magical about base 10 other than it matched our hands Bread up, Bro likes this. -

@jb it's all based on "it's easy to count to 10 on your fingers" kindergarten stuff.
GREAT DUDE, you can actually count to 144 with your fingers too. -

@sickburnbro that section in the middle where 1/3 cup equals X teaspoons plus Y tablespoons is the problem.

@chromeratt they just did that for their graph. Since there is a integer relationship between tbsp and tsp, it means its a direct relationship to tsp. But - for actually working in the kitchen, it's faster ( and this is the point of this - a easy way to get things done in the kitchen ).
Note that this is why measuring everything with a scale in the kitchen is shitty. It's a mind-numbingly slow way to get things done for people that have shit to do. -

@chromeratt If you're making someone's special birthday cake? Sure weigh everything out. But if you are making biscuits for tomorrow? yeah dog I don't want a recipe that requires me to weigh the flour, weigh the fat, weigh the water ... -

@feralphilosophernc @jb it's because everything nowadays is geared to that, and until you get to advance math, it "works"
But once you get into stuff like imaginary numbers, and (imo) more importantly - radians, it's a massive hinderance. -

@sickburnbro babylonian is closer to base 60 than base 12
60 has a lot of divisors so you can avoid fractions
everybody adopted that because it makes a load of sense for anything circle related like angles, or even time
the metric people never suggest moving time to base 10 because that would be nuts
"what time is it?"
"it's 7.33333333333333"

@EvilSandmich I don't even think it's good for peasants, I think it was good for french bureaucrats who had to do mind numbing amounts of trivial calculations in order to make their ridiculous bloody system work.
It reminds me of the soviets and their desire to have everything under central management "because it is more efficient" and meanwhile stuff is rotting in warehouses.
It's not about being more efficient, it's about control. -

@sickburnbro With The time change I was mulling the ridiculous French Revolution calendar with 10 months and mentally noted how base2 (binary) systems are both more technology friendly AND easier to relate to (with base12 being a derivative since it’s a factor of 2). Base10 is good for European peasants who had to take off their shoes to do complex math and not much else. -

@sickburnbro These guys like to talk smart because their dataset is limited; they know what they know, but they don't know what they don't know.
BASE12 is also counting on your fingers. Use your index finger to count the digits of the four fingers on the opposite hand, 12 total.
If you change pointer-fingers ever time you get to 12, you get BASE60.
It's easy, it's fast, and it's counting on your fingers. BASE60 counting on your fingers.Bread up, Bro likes this. -

@sickburnbro IIRC, there was a point in the metric revolution to do time that way as well, but it kinda went pffft
things like global coordinates moved to a decimal system because it's easier for computers, but conversion back and forth is relatively straightforward, just keep dividing the decimal degrees by 60
more or less the same with computer time

@BroDrillard Yeah, that's a absolute kindergarten answer through. "We must make complex systems because .. FINGERS!"
Also, as someone pointed out, people have been counting using bones of your fingers as positions which allows you to count 12 on one hand and still use the other. -
