UMM aktually, by the time of Jesus the Roman military is drawing from much more diverse pools of men from around the Mediterranean not just Italy and the cars stabbing Car Jesus on the cross should reflect this. -

@Dramamine @kerosene @Hoss UMM actually there was no Roman legion stationed in Judea before the first revolt so the Roman units were likely auxiliaries raised from the nearby Samaritans so the cars stabbing Jesus on the cross were half Jews. Hoss Delgado likes this. -

They were Roman in the sense that that was the empire that funded them and controlled them, not ethnically related to anywhere near Rome. The people who executed and poked Jesus being probably largely local and not Italian is what I was pedantically saying Hoss Delgado and pwm like this. -

Real shit. I love history and I like Roman history. As a appreciator who feels like his elementary education on it was sub-par: Great starting points are:
- Mike Duncan's History of Rome (warning for ear rape by terrible recording quality). Good chronological respector, is only as captivating as his material tbh.
- Dan Carlin/Hardcore History's Death of the Republic. The standard for history podcasts. The best storyteller. He does 5 hour long episodes on Rome and acts like they're to long only to do a single 5 hour opener for other series to do them justice.
- Patrick Wyman's The Fall of Rome and bits into Tides of History. PhD certified historian, often has great interviews. He did his research on letters sent during Roman times. Often good critical insights with the methods historians use.pwm likes this. -

While I'm reminiscing... a lot of the monetary policy and gold standard arguments will call back to Roman times. Ron Paul argued that the debasement by sliver and other instincts to mint coinage was an impulse to spend and essentially passing the buck to later generations which would make any empire in Europe a myth for the longest time and then... -

The interesting thing is that the denarius suffered much heavier debasement than the aureus. Even as the empire really started going to shit, emperors knew they couldn't debase the money used to pay the elite too much, so they just debased the denarii until it was basically bronze with a primitive form of silver plating.
