Day 2 — Genesis 4-7
Genesis 4
I've read through Genesis probably twenty times in my life and never taken the time to look up any scholarly commentary. I had often heard through evangelical churches "Cain's sacrifice was bad because it was just fruit and you need blood" or an explanation that it was an empty sacrifice not born of faith (scripturally supported) but without much explanation. I looked into commentary on this and found an interesting commentary by Charles Ellicott. The summary being that Cain's sacrifice was obviously not something he did happily (God loves a cheerful giver), God spoke directly to Cain to say as much. Think about that— God still spoke to Adam and Eve and their children the same way He previously did to Adam and Eve. Ellicott also brings up something fascinating about the names, specifically Abel: it was a name given to him, likely postmortem, because of his death.
Abel's sacrifice as an inspiration for later Gnostic beliefs that blood sacrifice is the only thing pleasing to God is interesting too, and appears to be directly refuted by God's gentle criticism of Cain for his unsatisfactory sacrifice and shows a caring attitude towards Cain.
>6So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is [d]for you, but you should rule over it."
Completely different from the idea of a wrathful OT demiurge type figure we're often told of.

Genesis 5: lineage to Noah. People lived a long time when there weren't so many and we needed a boost. Methuselah is believed to have died when the flood starts.
Genesis 6: Nephelim mentioned. Not as a huge deal, but more in passing. It was probably something people just accepted as reality at the time of Genesis' writing that corrupted lines of people existed who were deeply involved in wicked things. The stories must have been well known and remembered. Interestingly I learned of the Chaldean Genesis, which contains another telling of this story and is allegedly older than Moses'. Curious if anyone has thoughts on this . -

Genesis 7:
Flood habbening. Noah built an ark because of God's commands. It was likely seen as an insane idea at the time. Noah did it anyway. Sky water and floods? Please! Everybody else was going to keep on doing their thing. Noah spent at least 50 years working on this ark. Again this counters the gnostic-adjacent uncaring OT God belief by the facts involved. God personally instructed Noah on what to do, and he did it.
>15And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. 16So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in.
God even shuts the door to the ark— likely a massive endeavor presuming the door was an entrypoint for large cattle—before the flood, a sort of final reminder that He is in control and will protect Noah and those on The Ark. @whiteman_ -

Yeah, the whole "it should have been blood" thing is a weak interpretation. The Lord demanded grain offerings in certain circumstances in the Old Covenant and accepted those offerings has a general gift offering (Lev 2, 14:20). Christ is as much the Bread of Life as He is the sacrificial Lamb of God, so it was not a typological problem, either.
Hebrews 11:4 should put the nail in the coffin of that meme interpretation, too. Faith was what made the difference between Abel's sacrifice being accepted and Cain's rejected; and as we should know, God prefers obedience, rather than sacrifices. @SuperSnekFriend @BowsacNoodle I'm glad you mentioned this! It's an old argument I still see trotted out sometimes. I agree it had nothing to do with what was offered or even "how" it was offered, procedurally speaking, but the state of Cain's heart.
Cain's heart and deeds were evil and the entire story of Cain is one of a man who doesn't seek repentance. God gently chides him for the state of his heart and even tells Can his sacrifice will be accepted if he subdues the sin crouching outside. (As a side note, I've always loved the crouching imagery, as it brings to mind a beast ready to pounce, an active participant, demonic in origin [1 Peter 5:8]) Cain refuses to subdue his passions, gives in to them, murders his brother, lies to God. Then, even after God places a curse on him, Cain shows no sign of remorse or sorrow for anyone other than himself! He is worried only that people will take vengeance on him! Unrepentant and sinful to the end.
Thus, while Adam brings death into the world, Cain is often visualized as the father of sin, due to his unrepentant heart, as seen in 1 John 3 or Jude. -

@BowsacNoodle WHAT'S REALLY INTERESTING TO ME ABOUT THE WHOLE NEPHILIN/GIANTS/HEROES THING IS HOW IT'S SUPER PREVALENT IN THE BRONZE AGE, AND THEN AFTER THE COLLAPSE IT'S MOPPED UP BY THE SURVIVORS
LIKE, IN MYCENAEAN GREECE YOU HAVE DUDES TAKING BITES OUT OF LIVE PIGEONS, DOING ORGIES, RITUAL SEX, EVERY FUCKIN KIND OF SPIRITUAL STEROIDS TO BECOME THE GIGA-NIGGER WARRIOR
IRON AGE GREECE -- EVEN WITH THE INTEREST IN PROPHECY ALL THE DEMON-POSSESSED ORACLES ARE SLAVES. THE ORACLE OF DELPHI WAS A SLAVE GIRL.
NOT TO MENTION THE REST OF THE WORLD
YOU HAVE ALL OF THE NON-ISRAELITE DESCENDANTS OF ABRAHAM LIKE EDOMITES OUT THERE KILLING GIANTS
YOU HAVE UNRELATED PAGANS LIKE KING CEDARLAOMER KILLING GIANTS AND THE DISTINCTION IS MADE THAT HIS GUYS ARE JUST REGULAR PAGANS BUT THE ONES HE SUBJUGATED WERE GIANT CLANS
THE IRISH MYTHS ABOUT KILLING GIANTS ARE ALSO AROUND THAT TIMEBowserNoodle ☦️ likes this.BowserNoodle ☦️ repeated this. -

@BowsacNoodle THE ILLIAD ACCOUNT IS "OH WELL THE HEROES HAVE DIED OUT AND OR KILLED EACH OTHER"
BUT THE ILLIAD IS ALSO KIND OF DAMNING OF THESE LARGER THAN LIFE GUYS AS BASICALLY ACTING LIKE THE GODS. THE GODS ARE LIGHT-HEARTED AND THEY RUIN PEOPLE'S LIVES ON A WHIM, AND HEROES ARE ALSO LIKE THAT
THEY'RE SO COOL AND SO STRONG AND YET LOOK AT WHAT THEY FUCKING DO -- THE ONLY THING LEFT AFTER THEM IS DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, AND ONLY THE PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO GO HOME AND HAVE PEACE ENDED UP WELL AFTER THE TROJAN WAR. -

@branman65 @nugger @Orkin_Awk @BowsacNoodle No I don't mean literal demons, I mean the meme version which is a schizo-ish version of saying 'bad'.
I built a 4 bit computer with wires and a big breadboard. It's not magic.
But fallible humans have impulses which can be negative. The use of AI has this negative impulse within it. "Oh you can trust it, it's a computer, oh you can just not understand it, it's fine, oh it's ok if it's owned by the rich and powerful they surely know better" and on and on. That's why I hope it's use is minimal and actual interested people do the bulk of the work on translation and piecing together this important bit of history.
This abdication of responsibility is wrong and sinful and if it is sinful why not call it demonic for a laugh? For a bit of ye olden shock factor? Maybe I should go look in a 600 page psychology textbook and find the correct, proper, materialist term invented in the late 19th century. :akarinShrug: -

Or we can get Biblical and reference the numerous times we're told to think and focus on whatever is good. Logically, that would mean not obsessing over the wickedness our society is steeped in. We can and should be aware, but don't let it consume you. I've seen too many people who fail that.

@branman65 @nobullyplz @nugger @Orkin_Awk Ted Kaczynski has interesting writings that were almost prophetic. I disagree with his methods and disavow them and I've done that in the past. As long as LLMs remain a mysterious black box outside the domain of knowledge and capabilities of ownership of common smart people, that should be treated as potentially compromised tech. It's the same reason I would never let an AI be a judge or judicator, which is something that was commonly advocated for by shitlibs 5+ years before chatgpt was a thing. -
