Yeah, the whole "it should have been blood" thing is a weak interpretation. The Lord demanded grain offerings in certain circumstances in the Old Covenant and accepted those offerings has a general gift offering (Lev 2, 14:20). Christ is as much the Bread of Life as He is the sacrificial Lamb of God, so it was not a typological problem, either.
Hebrews 11:4 should put the nail in the coffin of that meme interpretation, too. Faith was what made the difference between Abel's sacrifice being accepted and Cain's rejected; and as we should know, God prefers obedience, rather than sacrifices. (1 Sam. 15:22, 1 John 3:12)
