     Gen X were born after the enactment of Civil Rights Act of 1965

     Yeah, I get that's the common thing, just saying it makes more sense to stick to the 20 years generation format so X should be 56-76'. They can get clever with whatever name and event they want, but having varying number of years and start/end years is just weird.

I spent less than a year there because the romance of what I was doing (very low level NGO shit, not very interesting. I was young) wore off pretty quickly
     
     Here's a silly one. People who left the country and lived in the west would go back to visit and wear every piece of jewelry they owned to show off their relative wealth with their impoverished subsistence farmer relatives. They'd then call the embassy and ask to be rescued because they were "scared"
     
     Kids doing drug shit, getting ripped off, getting in a tussle and then arrested by local cops complaining to the embassy. Fuck you
     
     Grim - old local men who went overseas for 20 years, then either divorced their wife or she passed away, and then they are told by someone in their network who informs them of a young marriage-aged girl. They go back, she's older than they thought, they get their dick wet and lose all of their savings if they're lucky. If they're unlucky their Social Security check is sent to the country in perpetuity and they are in a shallow grave in the jungle
     
     Western men, particularly the defectives, go there to live on SSI or disability because it's cheap. You can't just be a permanent resident without forking out a lot of money. They disappear a lot, and the neighboring countries will often trade off these defectives to spread the milking of their families around - jail, fines, etc.
     
     They don't know how bakshish works, don't speak the language, and don't realize that they are, to the locals, not a person but a walking meal ticket

     This checks out with other stories I've heard in military circles, especially when it comes to southeast Asia. Back in 2007, I had an acquaintance I worked with; shortly before he left the service, he was telling me about 'a woman he met while on leave in Thailand' that he was totally smitten with, and his plans to move there and marry her. (If you saw what this cat looked like, the country bumpkin he was, it'd be easy to conclude as to why he would opt to visit a country like that...just saying.) Anyways, he actually followed through on it and we kept in touch regularly until he went radio silent in 2010- his email addy finally went offline in 2020.
     
     My guess is that, knowing him, he fell for something shady and is no longer among the living.

He bought a house in his gf's name, and as soon as he had a chunk of money in a local bank for "investments" they locked him up and seized it. He complained to the embassy, then tried to get local Americans to advocate for him. "Oh, you fell for that? LOL" was the typical response
     
     No foreign dick allowed in the local vaginas, sir. I think he ended up doing 3 years or so, and his reward was a free flight home from the embassy. Dumbass
     
     Our company had a multi-day "local laws and cultural practices" orientation along with examples of what happened to people who violated them. Most were simply funny, several were grim

Dad figured he was a fag, but we kept that between us, because he'd always show up at family gatherings with some hot model but never got or even talked about getting married and only bagged on my mom and her sisters for having so many children. Dude sold his home in Huntington Beach for over a $1 million and went to Thailand. Came back 5 years later flat broke (we can only speculate as to why, but none of it is nice). He sits in his studio apartment and drinks a half-gallon of Cutty Sark every day. Vaxxed as he can be, and the bastard still doesn't die. Mean to everyone who tries to talk to him - I'm not one of them. In fact, we are not allowed in the same room together by the rest of the family.

     This is a common story. After I got out, and when I got custody of my daughter, she was 10 at the time - she broke down in tears and begged me not to move her to another school. I managed to keep my promise, though just barely (we struggled financially for years), and she graduated with the same friends all together, 8 years later. Worth every minute of it.

I still remember my first real friend from childhood. Then my Dad got a new assignment and we moved away. Then I had to start all over.      If there were for cause divorces where the men could get monetary relief against the cheating spouses, a lot of this would go away.
     
     North Carolina still has an action for alienation of affection, but that's only against the suitor, not the spouse. It should be expanded. Simple as.
