Hello everyone! I just set up this new account?
Things seem pretty cool here on this "fediverse". What does that mean though, the "fediverse"? I hear it's using ActivityPub. Could anyone explain to me what that means? Thanks!

@cwebber activitypub is how people do kissing when they are very far away from each other
@cwebber it's a protocol for trolling commenters across different social networks.
Well, we ran a couple of conferences in 2019 and 2020 on ActivityPub, you can still watch the videos: https://conf.tube/c/apconf_channel/videos
@cwebber @wizard Never underestimate The Power Of Positive Mansplaining
@annika @cwebber "When two servers love each other very, very much, they may decide to do something we call 'federation'..."
Followed by excessively graphic pictures of message exchange.
@cwebber I really don’t understand why everyone is always going on about this activity pub.
Myself, I much prefer my passivity sofa.
@cwebber
When a girl wants to tease a nerd, sometimes she'll help write a w3c standard...
@cwebber A logistical marvel of engineering designed for the sole purpose of distributing cat pictures at scale using everyday things you have lying around the house, like a NetBSD toaster. Moderation here means being careful not to overheat the toaster you are using to serve the cat pictures.
@Gorfram @cwebber @wizard Part of it I think is people being in on the joke.
Though not everyone is!
There's a big difference between explaining something unprompted, assuming they don't know, and explaining something because someone asked. The humor here is comes from many people are excited to explain and don't check my profile. I don't think negatively for someone giving a sincere reply to a request, many are nice!
Meanwhile, here it's meant to be more performance art, especially to reflect what it's like when I *don't* ask and get told. Thanks for participating!
This is a running gag on the fediverse, originally created at a time where I got tired of people explaining activitypub to me, which happens, especially at conferences, more than one might think.
However, the post doesn't give that context, and I'm asking people to explain AP to me. A lot of people give it an earnest try! I actually really appreciate that, and if you're one of those people, that's great. (cotd ...)
Feel free to boost this pretty widely, would love to learn about what ActivityPub is and why I should care
@cwebber so when two servers really like each other... And one can be A and the other one P... And then they can Fedi.
I would know, I Fedi all the time!
@msh oh man!..
Fediiiii!!!
You have some 'splainin' to do!
@cwebber We call it a "fediverse" because everyone on here is a fed, hope this helps
@cwebber it started out as mocking mansplainers and it has transformed into something beautiful and majestic
@cwebber so many great people but certain ones I look up to in particular
thank you @evan do you know anyone who worked on it
@cwebber when two people fall in love, they pub/sub to each other and send love message in JSON.
@cwebber An activity pub is a pub with fun activities like board games and craft projects. There's an activity pub instance near me that has an adult coloring book night. It sounds wholesome, but they can get quite rowdy!
@FifiSch we will wait for AOL with open arms
@cwebber Hello, Christine.
"Fediverse" is just a nerdy word that only nerdy people understand just like "Gopher" or "Usenet" used to be back in the day. "ActivityPub" is another nerdy word only nerds understand like "TCP/IP" or "IMAP"
We are still waiting for our "AOL" or "Google" to come and make this thing simple, useful and enjoyable for the usual non-nerdy mortals.
And we really, really want the usual mortals to come.
But when/if they do, we will hate them, chastise them for not knowing enough about federation and maybe even call this day an "Eternal September part II"
...a reference they won't understand, but we will know it's a devastating insult...
@cwebber Or you could be like my students: getting a joke painfully explained to you because I'm annoyed that no one laughed at it.
@cwebber it's a website founded by a guy called gargron ramsey based on a protocal he developed with a professional ui design company
@cwebber I think that’s one of the things they use in primary schools now. You know one of these modern teaching methodologies.
;-)
@MichaelBishop @cwebber @Gorfram @alyx Yes, John Mastodon is the name on the 2009 ActivityPub whitepaper. But noone has ever been able to say for certain who that person really is.
The secretive founder of Mastodon.
@alyx @cwebber Isn’t that the purchase that made John Mastodon the richest man in the universe?
@cwebber Actually, it's called the Mastodon Network™
The US based company Mastodon Inc. recently bought ActivityPub.

(Some tone indicators might be helpful here)
John Mastodon's secret identitiy is Chuck Norris.
@WeirdWriter @cwebber Yeah, get in there before Chuck Tingle hears about ActivityPub
@annika @cwebber Do you mind if I use this in one of my romance novels? :)
@slothrop @MichaelBishop @cwebber @Gorfram @alyx I am John Mastodon
@jab01701mid @slothrop @MichaelBishop @cwebber @Gorfram @alyx
No! I am John Mastodon!
