Mr. Bacon (tony@clew.lol)'s status on Friday, 26-Jul-2024 11:59:54 JST Mr. Bacon alot of homes around here don't even use insulation anymore - they use a a new "zip system" which is just foam/pvc composite plywood.
Literally everything on new homes is built out of plastic. -

gentoobro (gentoobro@shitpost.cloud)'s status on Friday, 26-Jul-2024 11:59:55 JST gentoobro Ah yes. Much of this has to do with regulations surrounding the blueprints. It's extremely expensive to get a fully custom blueprint drawn up. Every tiny thing has to be analyzed and stamped by licensed architects and engineers, even if the general design has been in use for centuries. Nearly all houses are just some cookie-cutter pre-approved design these days, and many larger structures are essentially that. They move around some modules but don't have to redo all the work for them.
Construction cost also comes into play here too. There are so many mandatory expenses nowadays that they have to cut every last corner everywhere that isn't mandatory. The exterior walls have R90000 foam insulation lest a single joule escape and blow up the planet (or hurt Owens Corning's quarterly profits), but it's glued to OSB that is going to rot and fill with mold in 10 years because it's $3 cheaper per sheet.

gentoobro (gentoobro@shitpost.cloud)'s status on Friday, 26-Jul-2024 11:59:59 JST gentoobro Half of it is psychotic pearl clutching and half of it is special interest regulatory capture. While there are some sketchy buildings in Mexico, none of them are made of mold sponges or firewood and it's really nice to have actual bricks between rooms and neighbors.

maija (maijing@bae.st)'s status on Friday, 26-Jul-2024 12:00:00 JST maija @gentoobro @Tony the amount of regulation in the united states especially around housing is absolutely insane. its like, when i live in the states i remember oh yeah, so much as something that could make you trip if your clothes snag is illegal, meanwhile in eastern europe its like, yeah lets just keep aroudn our old soviet playgrounds that probably kill children full of sharp metal edges, they just work
i mean ffs my building has like, chunks of concrete missing out of steps, as far as a third fallen off, that would NEVER pass in america but like bro it just works its stable enough so people move on with their life -

Mr. Bacon (tony@clew.lol)'s status on Friday, 26-Jul-2024 12:00:01 JST Mr. Bacon Yah, i work in a lot of apartment complexes which go for 2200-3400 per month and honestly they are all the same. You'd be amazed at how similar layouts are across buildings in the US. It's like one developer designed them all. Nothing cozy at all, just heartless sheet rock, gray and shitty mdf trim. -

maija (maijing@bae.st)'s status on Friday, 26-Jul-2024 12:00:02 JST maija @Tony yeah its fucked. things tend to look the same here because yknow, the whole communism thing, but the thing is like, thats fine because they're genuinelly great apartments. i used to live in a kruschovka and it was genuinelly a great place to live. sure its cheap as fuck but like, the concrete helps hold heat super well and you can barely here neighbours if you ever do, the layout and shit is just enough to be cozy and not depressingly compact while you dont take up too much space (and society is more communal around these buildings anyways so is chill), often basements and communal garages, and they can be placed in areas thats otherwise a ton of fields, its super nice. like think of the states, usually an apartment builidng is more urban soulless depressing shit, here its like, contrasted very well to nature at times, not in the cities and stuff ofc but in many areas being able to step out of this little apartment building into just fields, that you can accesss exactly because your compactness allows you to AVOID those suburban sprawls? is just an amazing feeling to be quite honest. even my depressing ghetto ass courtyard is better than some concrete lot yknow -

or in this case concrete lmao, but it came with wood furniture. i said renovated cuz this is actualyl a pre soviet era apartment that i asusme just got renovated during then. its got some super retarded shit but its mostly pretty chill. nice wallpaper and stuff. i cant tell for sure because i dont want to damage it but there might actually be a thin layer of drywall between the concrete and the wallpaper, no clue why though
i dont get why anybody would target that soulless new shit, i want that same comfort i got in my childhood -
