I keep running into brick walls trying to find a simple roadmap/kanban tool that:

    1) Is Open Source
    2) Isn't GitHub
    3) Supports public sharing or embedding
    4) Bonus: can be self-hosted

Context: I'm creating a roadmap for @Linux4Everyone and I want it to be public.

I was hoping @nextcloud Deck would fit the need, but sadly it doesn't have a public sharing option, otherwise it would be perfect.

    Any ideas out there?

@deadsuperhero @Linux4Everyone @nextcloud I love Deck, and I'm currently integrating nextcloud apps into as much of my workflow as possible -- which is why it was so disappointing to learn there is no way to publicly share boards. (An ideas was proposed in 2017, it's still being kicked around).

@killyourfm @Linux4Everyone @nextcloud We really like Nextcloud Deck since it ties into the rest of Nextcloud. However, Focalboard is really good, and it’s part of Mattermost nowadays!

@killyourfm I think that Vikunja (vikunja.io) would check all of the boxes?

      1. Is open source
      2. Is not a code forge
      3. Supports public link sharing of a kanban without users having to create an account
      4. Can be self-hosted

Vikunja is on mastodon at @vikunja if you need any help!

@markpitblado @vikunja That does indeed check all the boxes. And bonus points for the cute Alpacas (edit: vicuñas!)

The demo I'm trying only seems to have sharing to users and teams, however. Not to public. But I'll reach out and ask!

      Thanks Mark.

@killyourfm @vikunja just doing some testing on my instance, if you click on the three dots for the project you wish to share (in the left-hand side menu), then "share" you should be able to set up a read only share link!

@deadsuperhero As someone who happens to work for a project that just closed a 20-year old bug, I understand the papercuts from both sides.

But yea, it's definitely frustrating. These little things are why someone might choose a proprietary solution over an open source one :(

@killyourfm @Linux4Everyone @nextcloud Yeah, it’s frustrating. A good portion of Nextcloud and its apps are phenomenally good, but certain things are still kind of undercooked.

A good example is the Mail app. It’s so, so close to being everything I want out of a web UI for mail, but there are a bunch of little papercuts. It’s getting a lot better, but…sigh 😅

@deadsuperhero That really is the core of the problem: funding.

Thunderbird is a rare success story because it has been graced with a forward-thinking council and leadership, plus a very generous donor community.

But I honestly believe many open source projects can apply the same donation strategies we use. I'm planning to be more vigilant about sharing those strategies, whether it's through Mozilla or my own platforms.

@killyourfm Yeah, no disrespect intended. Sometimes, that’s just how things are.

I think FOSS apps / platforms have come a long way in general, in terms of looks and usability. But, it’s still largely a culture of engineering that has too few designers in it. I’d like to think that’s changing, but so many projects need good design love, not to mention means to pay good designers.

      WeKan.

I built the HTML export, so you don't even need others to have WeKan to host your content.

It runs inside a docker and is trivial to import from Trello, and use.

Interesting and important topic! Thanks to everyone for your contributions.
With @nextcloud Deck, it is indeed not possible to share a link with external guests. In my humble opinion, @vikunja is ideal for what you are looking for, as it allows you to share all project views (List, Gantt, Table, and Kanban) externally via a link.
