     We used to have a couple blocks downtown with indie retailers. Menswear, a bike shop, a couple gift stores, a shoe shop.

     All gone now.

     Replaced with no fewer than four bars.

     My city is kinda a tourist town. There have been some nice indie stuff that disappeared, but a lot more has come in to replace it and has survived in the city. Sure a lot of bars, but a lot of niche clothing/outdoor/etc. shops. The malls are depressingly empty, but many of the stores all still exist .. they just moved out to standalone stores and strip malls.
     
     As far as the dude in the video, he seemed like a moron. The guy with a dashcam had to break hard to avoid hitting him. I've crossed three laners at non-intersections before, but you really got to look way down the road and be patient. You want traffic to be at a total stop, make sure the light is red, don't step in front of a truck a raised truck that won't see you, and stop and make sure you're clear before you cross the next lane.
     
     It does suck that so much of America is suburban strip mall now, but at the same time, there are big downsides to living is the confined claustrophobic streets of Chicago. Sure you can walk to the BestBuy, grocery store and movie theater in 15~20 min and you get that nice 15th floor view of everything, but you're also crammed in a box and the streets smell like sewage, bum piss and communism.

     We used to have independent gas stations. Little corner stores. But they're all gone, save one in town, Bunny's. Just a typical Vietnamese family-run corner store. It's the last one in town.

     All it really is people trying to keep up.

     That block looks like 1/4 mile.

     As a pedestrian, who has admittedly been hit by a car, we know the cost of using the lights. If you're halfway down that block, it's 1/8th of a mile, wait for the light, another 1/8th of a mile. The temptation to jaywalk is strong.

     What we have here is a DRIVER, unaccustomed to pedestrian life.

     He was trying to save a little time.

     The other truck didn't look like it was even going that fast. Like probably under 30mph in what looks like a 35~45mph zone. And who the fuck speeds up when they see a pedestrian? He slammed on his breaks, and stopped. The dashcam guy blocked both streets and called 911. Don't think the driver did anything wrong; sucks he now has a dent on his truck from a guy who made a terrible miscalculation/mistake.

     Walkable cities seem like a good idea "in abstraction" but in reality are as you describe.
     
     Where I live, I would not have attempted the road crossing that the fellow in the video did. Traffic produces rage and people floor it in response.

     Yelling "people are dumber today" is pretty low tier. The IQ test is probably going to be a similar same bell curve to the 90s. I doubt it's flattened. I think the edges of it (mostly the left edge) are just portrayed more now due to shot-chip and micro-celebrity streamer culture.

     I don't go to a lot of metal shows, but that seems rights from what I remember. Metal kids tend not to be too crazy.
     
     Now punk kids. Fuck those guys. I always try to avoid the bars in my town during "punk fest." On year we had to go in one cause one of her friends needed to get something off her boyfriend who was working door. He was like "I've broken up three fights and had to kick out two kids for sneaking in." I remember walking in and god damn .. the smell!

     Deathcore is what happens when you combine fat lazy person hardcore with Pantera style groove bounce speed metal and low quality doofus death metal like Mortician.
     
     You end up with music that makes smart people feel like they are getting retarded by the second and makes dumb people feel like they have found the secrets of the seven keys.
