@Wen @jonburr @Vonskinnback @TCMuffin @benroyce @Funwithphotos It doesn't feel as well thought out as that. The very idea of people wanting their country to be independent from the UK just seems to enrage lots of English people.I don't see the same fury coming from Scotland or Wales. Why do Scottish people not feel personally affronted when Welsh people say they want to leave the UK?I guess it has something to do with English identity in relation to their UK identity, but I can't quite say what.

  It's not just Edinburgh (I know you probably used that as a marker). Scots in general take a different view of communality, one which threatens the London establishment. Who knows, other parts of the UK might take up the demands for fairness and decent services.
  As far as Westminster is concerned, that way lies anarchy and a loss of their control.
  Scotland and NI leaving might result in an even bigger shock for them.

  the way i see it, the values and norms dominant in edinburgh are closer to the values and norms dominant in brussels than they are to the values and norms dominant in london
  so to me it would not be scotland leaving the uk, it would be scotland remaining in the eu

I mean, the visceral reaction expressed by many English individuals towards the very idea that people in the other nations of the UK do not want to be part of the UK. It's like they feel personally insulted. Why would that be?

  Of course this ignores all the decades England exploited our iron and coal whilst shipping the profits back to England 🤷

  The visceral English reaction to us leaving reminds me of someone clinging on to a relationship which long ago became toxic to both parties, but one half is hanging onto the legs of the other as they try to leave the house to start a new and better life 🤷

  Please show me in any of my posts where I have said I am against independence, yet alone "enraged" by it.
  It would be bad news for anyone in England who is left-leaning and hates the tories, but imho each county has a right to govern itself.
