CEO of "WW," which is the new (2018) name for the former WeightWatchers, says that "it’s on us to do better so that we can help people feel positive and destigmatize this conversation around obesity."

That's certainly an example of something, isn't it? WW quote from https://www.salon.com/2023/11/28/we-got-it-wrong-weightwatchers-ceo-embraces-life-saving-weight-loss/ - Salon isn't my favourite source but almost all other reporting on this is video. Other quote is from my own piece at https://ansuz.sooke.bc.ca/entry/372 .

    Who's next?

@mattskala @progo I suspect the Internet just finally caught up to them and it was impossible to hide that most of their customers fail so they had to restructure their mission so staying fat isn't a fail state anymore

@progo It seems clear that obesity isn't really just one thing, so what works and what's a problem for one person isn't going to be the same for someone else. Weight Watchers is one of those things - it works for some and not for others. (Much like Alcoholics Anonymous.) What I find really interesting here is the abandonment of the original mission, and glossing of that as some sort of *return* to the true mission which was previously misunderstood. That's part of a larger pattern.

@progo If someone believes that "lose weight" is not a good goal to have, then maybe that person should not be CEO of Weight Watchers. If the organization itself believes that, maybe it should shut itself down. Saying "Actually our *real* goal is social justice for fat people" seems like not a good way to go. There are other organizations for that.

Worse if they'd been a charity, of course. As a for-profit corp it's understandable they'd go where the profits seem to be.

@mattskala What has stigma got to do with all this? Most fat people are physically capable of losing weight and improving their health. If you don't acknowledge the problem and the solutions, you're going to keep dragging excess weight around and constantly feel like shit. On the other hand, you can do something about it and start to feel better in a month.

I'm pretty sure if I took Ozempic I'd feel a lot worse.

@mattskala I haven't always eaten the best food, and I haven't been physically active enough. I'm fat. I tried intermittent fasting (8 hour eating window each day), eating better, and exercising. I started to lose weight and I felt physically better and that affected everything else. I got sick a couple of times and just fell out of the good habits, and the weight and problems came back. I'm back on the good habits in the last month and hoping to stick to it this time.

@mattskala it's pretty obvious at this point that it's more profitable to sell things obese people want instead of trying to convince them to buy your products for weight loss.

Especially with Ozempic being prescribed for weight loss now.
