Interesting... mastodon.online (often used for testing upcoming features) now has a new public web page, see the attached screenshot.

This is the view *without* being logged in, and shows the Explore tab by default, with options to see Local and Federated. Try it yourself at https://mastodon.online

There hasn't been a new Mastodon release since May, yet there are some important new features now active on mastodon.online but not yet released in the main version, including hashtag following, built-in translation etc. Post editing isn't available, but it's been part of the code for a whie now in a deactivated form.

It's unclear why there hasn't been a new release in such a long time as new features pile up waiting to go out. Are they planning to release lots of important features all at once in some kind of mega-release?

I like the way non-users can see the trending posts etc in Explore, it gives them a better feel for what they might see on the server and the Fediverse.

However, one thing greatly concerns me about this new landing page, the server's identity is invisible to outsiders. There's no longer any custom picture or custom intro text, and it would make servers look identical.

It's also quite hard to see the "about this server" link to look up more info including the server's rules.

Yes, was thinking that. A huge blank area that could be neatly filled with the server's own custom info.

Totally understand if they take a while between releases, no complaints at all! :)

I was just puzzled why releases would slow down when so many major features are already on mastodon.online and haven't been released more widely. Feels odd?

Especially wondering about hashtag following, that's been on mastodon.online a while now.

It's an interesting theory about the official app, that was released with lots of features still missing. As you say, maybe delay is is due to wanting to let the official app catch up with what the web version has.

@brayd It's for sure good they're not a multi-billion dollar company, but having the same (or more) resources at hand to build a more ethical piece of software and service surely would be cool..... ?

@z428 @feditips agreed. Also at the end of the day it's still an open source project that doesn't have the same resources as multi billion dollar companies have - which is good

@feditips Blind guess: Maybe it's "just" due to testing and QA. Mastodon gradually becomes more visible with each and every Twitter exodus, and the more it does, the more it's possibly helpful to have releases in which web UI and mobile app work somehow seamlessly together and most of the important features do as they're supposed to. Maybe from that point of view, 4 months between releases aren't that long a time. ?

Hmm... wonder if that's deliberate to drive people away from larger servers, or to drive people towards joinmastodon?

Bear in mind this is still a test, they do often alter features before they get into the release version.

Unlisted is public, it just prevents it turning up in Explore, Local, Federated etc. But unlisted posts are visible on your public profile so they would be crawlable.

The non-public settings are followers-only (combined with follow requests switched on) and direct/mentioned.

I may make my default posting more restrictive. I already know enough people anyhow I think. I currently go with 'unlisted'. Not sure if this makes those public or not - because there is the other case of 'public', which I interpret as 'crawlable' by google et alia.

Just to make clear, DMs are not crawlable.

They're also not easily accessible by the admin.

In theory a server owner could see them by looking at the database, but there's nothing in the Masto admin interface to allow this.

The privacy risk on DMs is that a technically proficient admin could in theory look directly at the database, but they'd have to go out of their way to do this. It's not a built-in function of the Masto software.

@gemlog @feditips Short of making it inaccessible without a password or blocking all the GoogleBot IP ranges, Google's going to crawl everything. Even then, I wouldn't put it past them to bury some code in Chrome so it sends back whatever their users are looking at to circumvent any blocks on their crawlers
