@Poe can BlueSky block whole instances at once?
@Poe@gamepad.club
Wait bluesky doesn't support video? Are you fucking kidding me?
@philpem @Poe It's easier to switch servers now than it has ever been in the 15 years of fedi history, and people were switching servers all the time before there was any migration functionality at all.
Vote with your feet and find a server with a policy comfy for you.
@Poe I mean, I agree .. but the prevailing take over there seems to be "mastodon is twitter with a homeowner's association and all the same problems"
we really need a good solution for the issue the dot-art/tech-lgbt problem has raised: if your server admin turns into a Malevolent Dictator For Life, they can stop you from talking to your friends.
maybe there should be a way for users to opt out of individual server defeds - I dunno, I'm just spitballing here.
@Peternimmo @Poe @mho no place actually has DMs. Your messages have yo be stored somewhere. Do you want a corporation to be able to snoop through them to mine your data or use them as evidence against you for profit, or someone who is being held accountable by their peers?
@rotfarm @Poe @mho fair comment. It occurs to me that there was never a time when our communications were entirely private. The UK security service, MI5, are supposed to have used kettles to steam open envelopes so they could read letters sent via Royal Mail!
@Peternimmo @rotfarm @Poe @mho
While kinda true, there's a vast difference between trying to locate and read specific physical letters manually (among millions) - and software scanning server data.
On other systems it is a given that DMs are at least stored encrypted - Mastodon's private messages are plain text therefore literally no effort would be required to process them.
However that still requires access to the servers since data-in-transit is encrypted even if data-at-rest isn't.
@Jain @blogdiva @CrebboElodie @Poe "when will Mastodon add quotes"
Use the Mona app for Mastodon. Quote boosts work great.
"when will Mastodon add configurable text-limits"
Join a server with the glitch-doc fork. Mine has an 11K character limit.
Etc. Most of these are available to those who want them.
@Flaky @Poe @clacke I think those people are probably just waiting for everything to settle down and go to wherever the most people are. It's understandable. When there were a few satellite TV systems in the UK, a lot of people held off until one emerged as "winner".
How would you go about it for people who are burnt out from having to hop to different places? I know people make that excuse for not even going for Bluesky.
I think fedi might have the same issue as forums where people trust corporations to deal with their data than people on the internet. Some people might not like being able to talk personally with the admin and would rather trust an organisation over an individual admin.
@Flaky @Poe @clacke I'd rather talk to the admin, because at least that means there's a human being in the loop. Some of them will be incompetent, others will be malicious, but word about the good (and bad) ones gets around.
