We can* and should* be intentional in the ways that we consume media, and we do actually have a choice, but you do have to make it if you want something different.

Don't let billionaires tell you what the future is to be. It's not inevitable, and you can refuse to give your time and attention to things you don't want to grow. This doesn't mean to ignore things. just refuse to meet their terms of engagement.

There are so many ways to get information. Corporate social media doesn't have to be it. AI doesn't have to be it, but also....we do* all have to be louder, and start acting.

Do you have people in your life that bug you to troubleshoot computer problems for them?

Do they keep buying cheap, laptops or get hand-me-downs from family with no idea how to keep them running?

Do they keep complaining how computers "just don't last"?

I think it's really funny that they are specifically doing the type of thing have been advising not to do on their podcast for large businesses....which is using someone else instance....

So I've been listening to the new podcast by Flipboard called Dot Social about the development of Activity Pub and developing the Fedi. It all seems very heavily steeped in tech lingo, industry-Ness and how it develops into something that really just eventually becomes the next big wave of corporate entities

I feel like I really want to answer this with a podcast that pushes back on this. How rad people want to really change how they interact with social media. How they wish for the fediverse to be and feel different from what they've had as well as focus more on the personal stuff, art, culture and values.

Any takers?

Currently pretty short on rent this month, so I feel like I have to make an effort with any way I get to people. I generally don't like plugging myself, but there's no other way to make $ for being critical or making art on the internet

@HauntedOwlbear I would say "no problem", but it kind of is.(no salt) but Like, without having the problem, I couldn't yell about how to make it better, which is also work, and time away from the things I actually want to do, which is supporting people (ironically)

@HauntedOwlbear for parts where its just copy/pasting terminal commands, it's fine. The text in a terminal type font is perfect.

If what you're doing uses a UI. A visual cue of steps is the best, maybe with little text for direction.

Really. It gives my brain a little treat and tells me that I'm doing things correctly and I'm on the correct path.

Reblogging the same thing like 250 times somehow is more important that actual art?

I always thought tumblr was a reblog circle jerk.of people patting eachother on the back for stuff they share. I remain correct.

Still feeling rather weird that the things that the things I post on tumblr that get any traction at all and blow up more than anything I've ever posted anywhere else are other people's work or a screenshot of another social.media post.

Tumblr is weird. I don't like it, but thought "oh hey artists post there,right?"

@Peternimmo @Poe @mho no place actually has DMs. Your messages have yo be stored somewhere. Do you want a corporation to be able to snoop through them to mine your data or use them as evidence against you for profit, or someone who is being held accountable by their peers?

@novenary My partner says that in the Trip Pants days (the 90s) there was "one-legged pants"....it was literally a fucking skirt and men wore them...

@aral @tio so an important question here that needs to be asked......if there is an absance of alternatives, why aren't people making them? Is it defeatism? No profit? This doesn't seem to stop most FOSS projects from being made, so why not make a web browser?
