Browsing ebay for text terminals (I'm looking for something recent and ideally built into an LCD) and I read: "Keyboard sold separately for keyboard enthusiasts"
Please excuse me, I just need to go sharpen my kitchen knives...no reason...

Someone brought what looks like a complete 4-axis CNC controller to the #emfcamp swapshop...!
It's amazing to me how much human behaviour relies on trust, which is rooted in "nobody would be enough of a dick to break the rules". And then when someone does, it's "huh. Now what do we do?"

Time to fix this unholy dog's dinner
Legacy IP stickers? Yessir!
Didn't have a 6504 in stock, so I made an adapter to plug a 6502 into the socket on the #Tandata #Viewdata terminal. Sadly it still doesn't work :(
Success! Replaced the LUCY chip (SAA5070) and now it works a treat! Now to put it back together again.
"Whoever wrote this code clearly has no understanding of elementary mathematics or the most basic rules of programming."
Savage, but justified.

And that's another generation of students who just learned about SciHub and Libgen!
Steals your personal information? Do they know how stupid they sound? What information could it gather other than your IP address and the paper you were looking for?

Anyway, this old meme seems perfect as a response.
I'm pretty sure this joke is gonna make some people go nuclear...
@Flaky @Poe @clacke I'd rather talk to the admin, because at least that means there's a human being in the loop. Some of them will be incompetent, others will be malicious, but word about the good (and bad) ones gets around.
@Flaky @Poe @clacke I think those people are probably just waiting for everything to settle down and go to wherever the most people are. It's understandable. When there were a few satellite TV systems in the UK, a lot of people held off until one emerged as "winner".
@Poe I mean, I agree .. but the prevailing take over there seems to be "mastodon is twitter with a homeowner's association and all the same problems"
we really need a good solution for the issue the dot-art/tech-lgbt problem has raised: if your server admin turns into a Malevolent Dictator For Life, they can stop you from talking to your friends.
maybe there should be a way for users to opt out of individual server defeds - I dunno, I'm just spitballing here.
Been doing some #RISCOS development this evening. My Bush IBX100 booted into RISC OS 5 (32-bit) for the first time!
Blacklist operator turns out to be listing instances for seemingly arbitrary reasons. In other words, water found to be wet...
"We're starting a telegram chat to share information on bad people"
"We're sharing their PII around because people should know how awful this guy is"
"Hey, they listed my boyfriend as a transphobe, he's not a transphobe... but he did argue with the blacklist operator that one time..."
Seen it a million times, always goes the same way.
My GA586HX v2 (with K6-II processor) won't POST. Hopefully this is one of those boards which plays possum if the CMOS battery is flat. Otherwise I'm in for a Not Fun Repair. #retropc #retrocomputing
Doing some more work on this machine today. So far I've found that the case is filthy. the power button sticks, the motherboard standoff holes on the m/b tray are the awful pressed steel ones and all of them are stripped...
... I've ordered a rivnut tool and some rivnuts. I don't know why I'm even trying to fix this AT case, but I am.
Yes, the Gigabyte GA-586HX Rev2 will play possum if the CMOS battery is dead. Good to know.
I've given up on fixing the case, for now. A bunch of the screws from my Maplin PC case kit aren't correct, and the PC case seems a bit warped. Oh, and the feet are missing.
I've ordered a bunch more stuff to go with the rivnut kit - notable a PC case screw kit that looks like it fell out of the 1990s... shame it doesn't include any of the plastic snap-in case standoffs. They're really hard to find!
