The long @‘s are because Alex decided to support mastotroons (dumb Alex move, many such cases). Pleroma and soapbox also have long ID numbers btw. There is a culture issue, but it doesn’t change the facts that it’s objectively better in terms of censorship.
Well it’s not for boomers, you guys are better off on facebook and fedi which are like decades old, but it’s also a lot better than it was a few months ago. It’s a new thing so it’s still being developed.
@kroner@bot I tried to use it and got confused like a boomer about how to associate with the relays and kept losing my follow list. All the frontend software seemed bad.
Also yeah I have no interest in talking to a bunch of bitcoin maxies circlejerking about lightning network or whatever the fuck they talk about lmao.
Sort of but not really IMO, relays are basically the instances of Nostr and if your account gets jannied off of them then your reach is severely limited so its somewhat akin to being defederated :blobcatgooglyshrug: from what I understand at least
That’s not true, there are relays that share posts to other relays to prevent censorship, and most ppl on nostr are lolbertarians so they like free speech. Unlike fedi where if I tell someone to stop masturbating to drawings of children, all of a sudden I can’t talk to 80% of this side of fedi because of the PPN.
@alex if nostr is gonna win which is the good frontend to use because iris and astral were both bad in their own unique ways. Also relays are confusing and why do I keep losing my follow list.
I am literally a huge galaxy brain genius and I cannot be bothered to figure this out I already installed like an extension and generated a vanity key I did all this shit and I can't figure out a UI.
Well you shouldn’t be so stubborn and at least try to understand it before forming opinions. A lot of stuff is changing but the general trend is toward preventing censorship.
People seem to really like one called primal, and there’s also an amethyst fork called amethyst unleashed that removed the automated censorship. I need to look at this myself tho because Damus sucks and is run by a fag.
Also I don’t trust soapbox now because Alex said he’s going to use the same retarded censorship as the amethyst retard. But there are a lot of options.
@sneeden bruh someone needs to add a page to the fediverse wiki about the Pleroma Pwnage of Spring '23. It killed at least 4 instances, also rdrama died for some reason. Also KFcc is down again lmao. Everyone is pwned.
Those aren’t really inherent to nostr. I complain about that too and the tide is starting to change because the bittards are seeing that they’re driving ppl away.
That’s not how it actually works though. There’s a newish nip that broadcasts your relays so if you’re banned from one relay, your followers can still automatically find and see your posts.
I’m not a tech person so I only know bits I randomly pick up, but I really think it just needs more smart ppl to improve on it. Obviously fedi is super fragmented and broken as it is now and that’s not going to change, and this is a better model because you’re not tied to one instance like fedi or bluesky.
@bot@crunklord420@kroner I like the concept and think it's more censorship-resistant on an individual relay/instance level but I wish relays were discovered and added to your subscriptions automatically. I don't like "federating manually" and I don't think it will catch on. It's feasible for the admins of the 10 default relays you're subscribed to to all decide to block you and then you're invisible to 99% of people. It's more centralised than the fediverse even in its current state for that reason alone. When a couple of friendly fediniggas came over to shitpost in good humour they already started talking about having to boot people from relays so I don't think it's an unthinkable scenario.
Also every frontend I've tried is dogshit but that could be rectified easily enough.
@bot@crunklord420@kroner that's cool but it still doesn't help if the instance that rebroadcasts to other relays also blocks you. I don't know if the rebroadcasting relay is one of the ten defaults but I don't think people add many relays outside of those.
That doesn’t make sense, there are no “ten defaults”. It also doesn’t matter because you can use as many relays as you want, and ppl advertise their free speech relays often, I’ve seen it. So if one does ban you then the others still broadcast your relay list so your followers can find you.
Either way, it’s better than fedi, and it has the capability to improve upon it. Otherwise, it’s just broken as things on fedi are now, and that will never change no matter what you do.
I understand, I’m telling you that automatically adding your follows relays is a thing ppl have already considered to prevent censorship. It’s something any new client could do because that feature already exists.
@bot@crunklord420@kroner when I signed up, whatever client I was using gave me 10 relays to start me out with, with the option to add more. I think it would be more efficient if your relay list could automatically subscribe to relays, maybe by looking at the relay lists of users you follow and adding any new ones. This would also make it less painful in that new users wouldn't have to figure out their relay-shit right away.
Having to manually add relays whenever a joe-admin posts his link with a "pls boost" isn't going to work large-scale but an automatic subscription system would.
@bot@crunklord420@kroner on a censorship level it's probably better than fedi but holy shit the existing front ends are unusable. I can't live without my 3-column shitpost-optimised layout anymore.
Did you just try them? There are a bunch I need to try because Damus on iOS is trash, and the dev is a fag because he blocked me for calling him a cryptard. I just need to set aside an hour and do it lol.
In the US, I've got a somewhat small Roth IRA, mostly due to a friend urging me. Now I hope to be a raging tech exec by then but... in case I'm not, I gotta prep.
You get out of it what you put into it of course. But I genuinely can pick up a pamphlet from some dumbass "retirement management" company and evaluate the terms they're offering. I can cut through the bullshit. I don't expect I'll be working as a loan adviser anytime soon, but just being able to say "eh these terms are a little above market but still what can you offer me" is valuable life skills.
Lol it's a free Yale course online. Check it out. Won't advertise it because I'm not a corporate simp. But the information and rigor is solid. Recommended to educate yourself on the modern financial world, whether you want to abolish it or grow from it.
Oh it serves a valuable purposes in society. I took a legit online Yale course to educate myself (actually did, very educational).
Society lives on a bed of uncertainty and being able to buy potatoes regularly depends on a bed of actuarial science to survive without delving into war every winter shock.
Still, the industries are predatorial as shit. Dudes should afraid for their physical safety.
Y'know, I keep hearing about this Hitler guy... he's got his positions, I'm kinda on board with his economic principles, those fucking bankers can be pretty goddamn faggy, we should them in the stockade, but idk I've got some reservations about his racial policies...
@bot@crunklord420@kroner I tried a whole bunch of in-browser ones. I don't like phone-posting and am not invested enough yet to download a desktop client. They all had the same problem - you have to click to open notifications which then immediately puts your timeline out of sight. I just want my notifications in a sidebar that peacefully coexists with my timeline like it does in pleroma-fe. Pleroma-fe has the perfect UI. I can compose three separate posts in the same window. I can reply to replies in my notifications while I reply to shit I see on my timeline while I start a whole new thread of my own. I know soapbox overlays notifications too so it wouldn't be hard for a soapbox user to make the transition.
