I think this poll can tell us a lot of things.

It tells us that single user instance can struggle to be seen.

It shows us that re-blogging is key to being seen.

It shows us that more work needs to be done towards discoverability in the federated timeline.

It tells us that a LOT of people don't even know what the Federate timeline is because the Mastodon app doesn't have that feature yet. ( a HUGE mistake I think )

Were YOU surprised by the results? What do you take from it?

@Mrfunkedude my take on your poll is that once people find the people they're going to follow they just branch out from there and don't care about going to the federated timeline. Just my opinion though.

I pop on there and scroll through a couple times a day just to see what's going on in there but I don't actually spend a bunch of time. The app I'm using makes it fairly easy.

@Mrfunkedude I was surprised at how few people browse the federated...it's such a good way to see people from across the fediverse and it never fails to surprise me...see it both on my laptop and tablet since I access with browsers...

@jadevol @Mrfunkedude Same here, James. I mostly use a web browser and I always check out the Federated timeline a couple of times a day. I enjoy my home instance because it's curated to suit my taste but it's so interesting to get out into the Federated network and see new things going on from people I don't know... yet.

@Mrfunkedude Even on my moderately-small instance, I tend to think of the Federated timeline as "drinking from the firehose". I only really use it when my poor neurodivergent brain needs a big, fast-moving stream of content.

@trixter @Mrfunkedude I'm not diagnosed as neurodivergent but even I must agree with the way Trixter describes this. Federated TL is absolutely a firehose.

@heyfluxay I don't try to keep up. I go to the top of the federated timeline, scroll down so that it stops moving, and just read until I want to do it over again.

It tells me that people who only use their phones have a different experience than people who use a tablet or laptop and not the Mastodon app.

For me (tablet or laptop), getting acclimated was easy, everything is pretty obvious, and I find new follows on the Federated timeline just about every time I take a look. I'm there more than my Local timeline, actually.

@Mrfunkedude I did not know the Mastodon App didn't have Federated posts? I'd have dropped this place long ago, if I used that App. I didn't like it from the beginning and went to Tusky, but mostly, I'm on a PC with wide 4 columns, Home, Notifications, and Federated. There's so few local, it's just me posting for hours. The federated is the Public side, your tiny server is just your Karaoke friends at the club. ?

How does the official app not support the Federated timeline? Especially when every third party app does?

      @That_One_Guy
100%. I follow a ton of people and I don't even try to read all their posts. I have several lists set up and usually read posts from my Local feed, then go through a subset of curated lists, depending on my mood. I don't really have a need or the spare time to go read posts on the federated feed. I use Fedilab on my Android phone and a Chrome web browser advanced view on my laptop.

@djwfyi @angiebaby @AnneTheWriter1 Well admittedly I havent used it in about 4 months, but even then I couldn't find it. If it's there, they've made it so hard to find that it might as well not be.

@angiebaby @Mrfunkedude @AnneTheWriter1 The federated timeline is there, it's just really convoluted to get to. I don't use the official app, but I've seen others mention the path to find it. It's not intuitive at all.

I too use Fedilab and Chrome and a similar setup. I try staying current with my home feed and the rest is there when there's time. I'm trying to get out there more.

@Mrfunkedude I'm not sure about the last point, there... It tells us that of the 2k people surveyed, most didn't choose to use it, but has no info on _awareness_... (I agree w/ your earlier conclusions, for what thats worth!)
