@intrepidhero I hadn't thought of that but I've certainly experienced it with SMD-mounted audio jacks on music gear; I've heard of it happening with SMD USB-C jacks on music gear that gets un/plugged a lot as well

still; I'm not sure that covers the absolutely bananapants pattern I'm seeing with the particular cable and hub situation. I've tried all my other hubs and the C input port on my monitor, and other USB C-to-A cables, all to no avail

I'm all out of ideas on this, maybe someone here will know

I have an external 1TB SSD formatted in ExFat that I have been using with my Macbook Pro, iPad, PC tower running Linux (Unraid OS), and more for many years now. I believe the drive is about 6 years old.

Recently, something has happened whereby when I plug it directly into *any* of these computers directly, it will not mount; depending on the USB cable it may not even show up in Disk Utility or similar (yes I'm using data cables, same cables mount other drives no problem)

The only way I've been able to successfully mount this drive *for any device* is via a particular USB-C-to-A cable, through the USB hub on my monitor, when the monitor is connected to the computer via USB-C

I tried wiping and reformatting the drive to no avail, the problem persists. The whole point of this drive is for sneakernetting, and this new behavior prevents that

Disk repair tools say the drive is healthy. Any ideas besides replacing it?

@Avner part of my problem is that I also want to get the kid out for pickleball & pool time, but they very much want to play it by ear and not feel obligated to do something because "it's on the calendar”

Sadly the location is not conducive to reward-like activities

This advice is dependent on AI-induced errors being treated as an externality and thus not something the company is liable for.

I dearly hope that this does not become the case - the limited liability of corporations is bad enough. If companies are given any kind of legal pass for AI mistakes and hallucinations...

Somebody always has to bear the pain of mistakes. Capitalism and AI could combine to make sure the wealthy are never that person.

@joshsusser my morning routine at home goes like this when I go downstairs:

    - measure coffee beans, grind coffee (outside if my partner is still asleep, the grinder is right by the side door), put in machine
    - rinse out coffee carafe, get water for coffee (my partner doesn’t like the metallic taste that the first 15s of water from the tap produces in the morning), put in machine
    - start coffee maker
    - get mug, go to fridge, put water (and vitamin D drop) in mug; set on counter by fridge
    - get two plates down from the shelf, packet of wet cat food, feed cats
    - take mug back to coffee maker, get my medication out, take that wit the water
    - swap mug and carafe, pour some of the carafe coffee into mug while mug collects the still-brewing coffee

We went to my in-laws for three days in late November, and it took me three weeks to get that back up and running reliably. And my partner wonders why I don’t like to travel.

An example for myself & my family: my family joined an athletic club in October, nominally because it was the best option for getting our kid into swimming lessons. My partner already has some other classes she takes, and my kid is generally resistant to going out there “to exercise” but otherwise likes having fun in the pool or playing pickleball with me; but being the driver of “let’s go work out” generally falls to me. The club is geographically disposed that going there requires intention

I am trying to get out there to exercise in various capacities at least four times a week, and so am brainstorming various ideas which could help with that. Calendering it? Weekly checkboxes with a reward? I’m not sure what’s going to work but the strategy so far of “play it by ear and marking it on the calendar to check success later” isn’t working as well as I’d like

Doing this during school break is beneficial as well, because time-management wise, this is an edge case; but I’ve generally found that if I can make something work for an edge case it will work more generally as well

as someone with #ADHD I’m very resistant to the idea of “turning over a new leaf” or “starting something new” with the new year. People with ADHD do this sort of stuff *all the time* (not just on the new year) and it rarely if ever sticks

I’ve found the best thing I can do for myself to get something to stick is to figure out how to make it automatic, part of a routine. And even then, routines are fragile! I can have a routine I’ve been doing solidly for *years* broken by traveling for a few days

If what I’ve written above speaks to you, I invite you to follow my new year’s path not of starting something new, but of figuruing out how to strengthen and reinforce your routines, how to *keep doing* something that isn’t entirely automatic for you yet and make it more so

@tclark I think the thing I'm speaking to is a bit different; our acquaintance is falling for tiktok grifters (of one kind or another) and it seems those peoples' audiences are what I might call “those want to be creative without putting the work in”

and a lot of their arguments and methods smell very similar to, for example, the granola-to-antivaxxer pipeline

My partner considers herself non-technical (favoring nerding out on physical things over electronics, basically) and she had a lot of questions for me while trying to understand the AI rabbit hole our acquaintance went down; it spanned a whole bunch of topics but the one that stuck out most was “finding one's artistic voice" and "making things accessible to those who couldn't afford art school” because that's often a highly subjective thing

And – I mean, I think that our brains (but mine in particular) understand things through metaphor and simile, but the one that stuck for me is – it's like hiring a ghost writer, or commissioning something. You wouldn't do that and claim it's your creativity. GenAI tech — even if you were to train your own model in an attempted ethical manner on public domain works — is *at best* worse than hiring someone else's vision and voice, because the machine isn't capable of having a vision or voice, it just averages things, just blends them up, and not in the good kind of way that results in things like Weird Al Yankovic's Polka medleys

As for the “can't afford art school" argument – that is white people entitlement at its fucking finest. Most people who actually *went* to art school couldn't afford it either. Maybe they were fortunate enough to get in on scholarship, maybe they were fortunate enough to have parents to pay for it, but most people who go through art school do it for the love of it, and pay dearly for that for years or decades to come. You want to use that as an excuse for shitty ethics and general laziness? Fuck you

Regardless, there is a difference between "wanting to have made something" and "wanting to make something”, and in that difference is where you will find an artist's voice, for it is borne from the struggle of making hundreds or thousands of decisions of such minute detail that no amount of prompt tweaking could possibly capture the nuance. Using GenAI isn't "making something", it's commissioning it, often from stolen goods

you'd think, living in multiple worlds as I do, that I'd have learned to be more specific in my searches by now. And you'd be wrong.

so @TetroniMike launched a pretty cool donationware app meant to help you resolve small little disputes like where you should eat dinner or who gets the last piece of chocolate; my family has already used it a number of times for this purpose. A few sound effects I made for Mike's forthcoming game found their way into it as well

@jepyang I read a thing not long ago asserting that they do this because the whole idea of trans men contradict their entire argument against trans women, and it’s not like they’re the most rigorous thinkers to begin with, so they just pretend trans people who aren’t women don’t exist

I’m not an expert on those things but my own experiences as a cis person with finding a masculinity I’m comfortable with that’s not derived from patriarchy certainly vibe with that

@Alexjgriffith I’m thinking maybe I should disconnect my M1 MacBook from the internet and just never update the OS or any of the software on it (I’m really disappointed in Bitwig 6; I still have workflow frustrations with 5 but the 6 betas a regression for how I work) and just do all my internetting through my tablet

It’s not realistic at all but I can dream
