here’s one i just learned today: the graduate was adapted from a novel? and the author wrote a sequel? 40+ years later??

anyway apparently the sequel sucks but i did really enjoy the review quote, "a bit of fluff sure to satisfy those clamoring for a graduate sequel."

i can’t tell if it’s just a simple sincere review saying “not bad!” or if it’s deeply scathing sarcasm on the idea that anyone gives a crap about a sequel to the graduate after 40 years

paul simon said “hey i have this song i’ve been working on, it’s about nostalgia, mrs roosevelt, joe dimaggio” and mike nichols said “it’s about mrs robinson now”

i think it’s really funny that mike nichols commissioned simon and garfunkel to write new music for the graduate, and then while he was waiting for them to complete it he started scoring the film using their existing music and decided he liked it so much he called them up and said scratch that i’ll just use your old stuff.

as an artist, that would either feel like a slap in the face (all that work gone to waste) or the biggest relief ever (hadn’t actually started yet), no in-between

i’m only about halfway and im not giving it the closest listen (doing housework) but this already feels at least on par with campfire headphase or tomorrow’s harvest

2/3 of the way through and i cannot say i understand the criticism that it’s too much like their older work??

to me it feels like they took my favorite parts of tomorrow’s harvest (which are largely the parts that sound the least like their early work) and turned that vibe into a whole album

idk, perceiving music is weird

i found out my iphone deadnames me in a very specific scenario. (i have changed my name everywhere in their system i have access to.) the apple service rep’s best idea is to try updating my phone to the newest firmware to see if the problem resolves itself.

tbh i think i’d rather have a transphobic phone than deal with liquid glass.

i was originally thinking about FOSS and how if you got a significant portion of anti-AI open-source contributors organized and striking any project that accepts LLM-based code, you’d probably actually get some policies changed.

and it occurred to me that it is both kind of an odd situation (labor organizing against “ai” instead of against a specific boss) and far more than just programmers are affected by it.

idk, it feels rare that we have a singular existential threat to workers across so many industries

free idea: labor union but instead of being a single industry’s workers teaming up against their bosses, it’s workers in any/all industries teaming up against AI/LLMs

i am grateful to fediverse for turning me trans but it does suck that now i have opinions about software development

somebody convince me that open source software is not simply DIYing the means of production and then giving it to the capitalist class for free

it took a lot of work but i feel like artists and other creative workers have successfully developed a general culture of “don’t work for free.” people will offer experience or exposure but we generally understand that it’s just exploitation. even if you enjoy the work! get paid! even (especially!) if the work is important and aligned with your interests and values!!! get paid!!!

anyway i think open-source maintainers should think about this
