i can’t not take things apart, i barely even realize it’s happening

why would i “pay” a “professional” to fix something in “7-14 days” when i could do the work myself and ruin a perfectly good guitar in mere hours

ok not only did i not ruin the guitar but i fixed it and only did minor damage along the way!

(i don’t think i’ve ruined the guitar…yet)

the main problem was that looking at the trem bar wrong would knock it out of tune. the whole trem assembly was really creaky and clicky and wobbly too, which seemed like it might be related.

i tried a bunch of different things (turns out jazzmaster setup is a whole can of worms), took the whole thing apart (a few times), found a few screws that seemed to be stripped from the factory (and repaired them)…

starting a random major project with no clear end in sight on a whim and then finishing it in exactly one day is such a fucking adhd high

what did the trick in the end was sanding down the trem pivot plate so it has a nice clean edge to turn on. i also put on some new strings, one gauge heavier, i dunno if that helped but i dont think it hurt.

trem doesn’t make noise any more, and returns to the same tuning every time now 😁

(minor damage limited to some scuffing and two new blemishes i added. nothing terrible, just character.)

seriously it was like 50/50 at best whether i was gonna have a working guitar tonight or spend the next year with pieces of guitar all over the house

gosh i have really missed playing guitar (before about 8-10 months ago it had been more than a decade since i played). more than i realized.

i’m rubbish at it, and i’ve always been rubbish at it, and tbh i don’t think there’s much hope of me moving very far beyond rubbish—i just don’t have the coordination—but it sure is fun in way that synthesizers aren’t. (synths remain first in my heart tho lol) requires a different kind of precision, conveys a different kind of expressivity.

finished The Residence. i caught the murderer before the detective but only just barely.

my sense of humor is that i frequently end up enjoying reference humor without knowing the context—and actually, without even realizing that it’s reference humor at all—because the apparent non sequitur of it tickles my brain
