ugh, got a promotional email from a favorite synth shop with a big ugly AI-generated banner at the top
i emailed them them about it, because i do really like this shop but i avoid businesses that utilize AI, and the owner got all defensive about “the economic realities of owning a small business”
and just…dude your shop’s been around for like a decade, don’t try to bullshit me into believing nauseating AI cartoons are a necessity for running your business
cmon
@forestine oh fuuuck i had no idea
(i also didn’t know who john k was at all till just now, i thought this was about John K Samson at first and had a much bigger “oh fuck” reaction)
roller derby is just so wild. can’t believe someone strapped wheels to their feet once and thought “let’s make a full contact sport out of this”
the opposite of a somersault is a winterpepper
so the olympics in the US are absolutely drowning in commercials for every tech company’s newest AI chatbots, which is annoying
but like, damn, these commercials are so bad. they aren’t even trying to pretend this shit is useful
a kid walks up to a bunch of other kids playing sports and speaking a non-english language.
he says “can i play?” they look at him funny.
he puts “can i play?” into his phone’s AI assistant and it translates it, and the other kids gladly let him play.
like… you could do that twenty years ago? babelfish was not perfect but it was always good enough to translate simple 3-word phrases into something more or less understandable?
haha fuck yes
mastodon i need your help (boosts welcome)
what are the best electronic music albums by trans people that are available on streaming services? i got a few long days of driving to fill. fwiw i got wendy carlos, SOPHIE and kim petras covered already.
PS: you are not allowed to lecture me on how bad streaming services are unless you spend at least $10 on my music first: https://jepyang.bandcamp.com
much like americans say soccer instead of the more obvious international name football, the olympic sport of netball is simply the international name for what we in america call lacrosse
is it just me or does jd vance look a lot like the guy from tucker and dale vs evil?
ok i don’t think it’s just me
i get that fedi is a highly non-representative sample pool, and my personal feed even less so…
but i gotta say, the mood shift from joe-as-candidate to kamala-as-candidate has been palpable. there is suddenly an enthusiasm that really just wasn’t there before. some folks were all-in on biden, but they tended to be, yknow, *those kinds* of liberals. now i feel like im seeing just regular people who are kinda like “yeah ok, i can dig this”
honestly the fact that my feed is highly unrepresentative makes this more impressive and not less, since i think my follows lean pretty hard left-of-liberal
@mattly on second thought it’s a zero-feedback seller so maybe we’re both better off not touching this one 😅
i know i posted a month ago about how there was a Casio FZ rack unit on ebay for a very reasonable price
now there’s another for even cheaper 😳
down into territory that’s making me consider owning a second one. please somebody buy it before i make a bad decision.
what’s something that when you got to it, it felt like you were arriving really late, but in retrospect you were actually quite early to?
like i remember getting into magic: the gathering around sixth edition (so like late 90s) and feeling like there was already an impossible amount of lore to it, i’d never catch up… i had no fuckin clue.
i really like when people cover songs originally sung by someone of a different gender, but don’t change the gender/pronouns of the people in the song. but the flip side of this is that one of my favorite gender-swapped covers is build me up buttercup.
the singer has changed to a woman, and the lyrics *have* changed so the song is still straight, but now it’s a song about a fuckboy named buttercup
🥹 beautiful
i also didn’t realize it was a cover song for like ten years after i first heard it, lmao
i thought it was so cool that a girl called their boyfriend “buttercup.” between that and my long-held appreciation for any songs with gender-subversive lyrics, i suppose this qualifies as a #ThereWereNoSigns situation 😂
when i finally heard the original it was like ok that does make more sense, but i love the song just the same anyway
yeah, dang, the more i think about it, the more i realize there really were quite a lot of gender-y songs that made a strong impression on me in my younger years.
some of them, of course, are a bit problematic 😐
